I agree with this. In the country there are a lot of Republican leaning people who would not want to be associated with the MAGA thing.

Of course, those who are willing to hang on claiming to be Republicans but reject the MAGA corruption are derided as RINOs by their MAGA fellows. Many people won't put up with that and leave the party but their essential core values do not change. So they are independents who think like traditional Republicans.

I think most Republicans today are NeoCons, just like they were 10 years ago. The ones I know exhibit all of the same values and positions they did then. They just don't want to be called NeoCons.

That's another falsified pejorative. Not too different than claiming that most democrats are socialists.

Anyway my point was fairly specific, generally more "Independents" lean left than right and that been the case for years and years.

Anecdotal ... but that is my experience.

I don't see any difference between today's Republicans and neocons of yesterday and I know lot of people.

Even the ones doing the MAGA - MAGA - MAGA thing. Once they identified as Republicans they drank up the NeoCon philosophies and positions like it was mother's milk.

I am not using NeoCon in a pejorative sense. It's a real thing.

I think the electorate is continuing to evolve. As more Republicans leave the party they are bringing their positions with them, mostly into the independent ranks.

In other words, these people are NOT leaving the Republican party because of some budding liberalism, they might become a bit more open minded about certain issues and more open voting a split ticket but they do not essentially change their values. Independents simply feel less compelled to compromise on their positions than party members are.

This is an old post, but looking back to this pre-Trump observation it was very prescient.

Really? Like the time Trump appointed the first openly gay person to a cabinet level position??? Was that what you were thinking of when you agreed with that???

You are most certainly using neocon as a pejorative.

MAGAs use it as a pejorative, I never did.

I am talking facts here. NeoCon represents "new conservative", the post WW II kind that abandoned isolationism and advocated for an immense military budget during the Cold War.

Nothing has ever changed, MAGAs are exactly the same.

Sure, today more Republicans are against foreign entanglements and some have even advocated withdrawal from NATO, but when you suggest that we cut the defense budget by an amount equivalent to the savings they balk. The Pentagon budget is a sacred cow.

The party is still anti-labor and pro-business. The party still denies global warming, and it is still in the pockets of special interests like Big Pharma and the Petrochemical industry.

Nothing substantial has changed in the Republican Party. It is almost identical, except that they are embarrassed to be called NeoCons. They are the same people they were ten years ago, they have not changed.
