Not really.
Teaching about a particular religion is teaching about something. They teach about math in trig classes. Not every student in the class will become a mathematician. At some point in this school's history/social studies program, they will teach about the Sikh religion. Probably explain in what part of the world the Sikh religion began, and how it started, making it clear that Sikh is not part of the religion of Islam. And then, from the educator's comments in your OP, they will talk about how Sikhs came to live in the local community where the school is, and how they've contributed to their community.
That's like explaining in what part of the world the Puritans began, how they started, their movement around Europe and the difficulties they had with the more established Christian sects. And then, explaining how the Puritans came to establish a colony in the New World, and the role they played in American society.
