And yea..there is a benefit to it. A day off is always a benefit. It doesn't need to have anything to do with religion. This country can afford to shut down for a damn day, and it needs to be shut down for a day.
Well as long as you have a logical explanation for your stance. I run my errands when I have time, I don't need you or the government picking an arbitrary day every week where I cant get stuff done.

Gee, cashiers can't ask for Thanksgiving off way in advance ?
They need a union to do it for them ?

Benefits has nothing to do with religion.

Tex, I have to say, sometimes it helps to have a few "work rules" around. I work as a professional, and it's always difficult around the holidays, esp. Christmas and the 4th of July. Thanksgiving is not an issue b/c we are closed the whole 4 days, Thurs-Sun. But at the other two, and also in general in the summer, someone always makes some sort of non-refundable airline reservations to Michigan, or Hawaii, or Timbuktu, and then expects to get the time off, no matter who else wants the time off, and no matter when they worked the holiday last year, etc. Someone is always having some slew of family coming into town, ditto. My daughters say the same kinds of things happen at their workplaces. One is a physical therapist and one works in a museum. So it's not always as simple as it sounds.

The point being, with some work rules (not saying it has to be a union, but it has to be something with teeth), either "first come, first served", or "everyone has to work either Christmas or New Years", or whatever, the same people don't end up working all the crap days.

And then other times it is. My son got several days off (he was the first to ask late September) so we were able to go away. He did tell his mgr though that he'd be in town and available during the Christmas break (that's when most out of town students want off to go home).

That is why the rules were on the books to begin with.

What are the benefits of forcibly shutting down businesses, restricting people from the ability to work, serve their customers, or earn money, and restricting the ability of people to get things done in their lives?

I created another thread for that, and I gave you lots of reasons why. Leave religion

It isn't "I asked first", or "I have more family than you", or "the boss likes me best" when there is a contract that spells out exactly how those who work holidays will be chosen.

Explicit rules are made as to who will work what holiday and what they will be paid....and agreed to by the majority when they vote on the contract.

So, when holidays role around.....everyone knows who is supposed to work, who isn't, and why.

But Walmart workers are not union.
And you don't know how many did get the day or several days off.

I think you're assuming 100% of the workers had to work.

You can really work things like that out without a middle man getting a cut of your paycheck.
