Mild compared to Phoenix and mild compared to the rest of the nation are 2 completely different things.
I love visiting Scottsdale, Az friends, but never again between April 1 and September 30.
For several months a year, one can count the folks outside except getting in/out of cars.
Ok...but Houston is one of America's largest and most diverse cities while Phoenix is not.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?
Phoenix is HUGE! And quite diverse, thank you very much. What group isn't well represented in Phoenix? We have 4.2 million people in Metro Phoenix. Houston has 6 million in their metro. So how are we not large and diverse? Our downtown is nicer, our Metro is prettier and surrounded by beautiful mountains. And even our suburbs have beautiful city centers.

Scottsdale is my hometown, and yes...it's tough in summer. Getting in and out of a car is brutal if it's been outside for a long time. The trick is to stay inside during the day. Most Phoenicians (on their days off) stay home during the day in summer, and hang out in the evening. I realize that some things must be done during the day, but if you don't have to, DON'T!! Too hot for that.
My dad gets his tee times at daybreak. Most joggers do the same. If you've gotta go out, try to do it well before noon. LMAO...it's the Phoenix way in summer.
But yeah, you kind of prove my point. Unless you enjoy sitting around all day on your front porch eating BBQ, the cost of living is directly related to quality of life. I could enjoy your life for about a weekend.
Hmmm, let's see...
I am enjoying living in a very comfortable (and affordable) 2500 square foot house, on an acre lot, in a very quiet, peaceful neighborhood full of pleasant homes and big oak trees. I like the view from my front porch, across a small lake - and sometimes I can hear a train whistle in the distance. It's very peaceful. But I've never eaten BBQ on that porch!
In the past week, I've done the following:
1. Attended an art class at a local art museum - it was BYOB so I brought a bottle of merlot to share with the table of very interesting local artists. Our art got better as the evening progressed - or so we thought!
2. Attended a gun show.
3. Enjoyed a dinner at a local microbrewery - great beer and a delicious appetizer of ahi tuna!
4. Planned at trip down to the Austin area to look at real estate.
5. Attended my yoga class several times.
6. Enjoyed a cup of coffee on my front porch, while watching a flock of little wrens playing together in the front yard.
7. Speaking of the front yard, I did some weeding and plan to do some more today - it's going to be in the mid 60s this afternoon!
8. Agreed to lead a study on Dietrich Bonhoeffer on Wednesday nights.
9. Watched "Wild China" and a couple of episodes of "Foyle's War."
10. Enjoyed an evening in the hot tub with my husband - looking at the big Texas sky filled with stars.
11. Helped my daughter plan a weekend trip to Fort Worth - made sure she included the EXCELLENT art museums, as well as the cattle drive that happens twice a day through the stockyards.
Now - this may not be your "cuppa tea," but it's a far cry from "sitting around on the porch eating BBQ."
