I love how people trot out that fact as if to take the blame off white southerners for that. Slavery was largely a race based system with white people (and very few black outliers) at the top, and four million black slaves at the bottom. And bringing up black slaveowners won't change that a bit.
putting the blame on white southerners is where you are wrong. the average southern soldier in the civil war didn't own shoes. you think he owned slaves? you had a system of rich white aristocrats at the top who owned slaves, and controlled the flow of information. don't pretend that all southerners were slave owners, and that they actually knew what they were fighting for in the civil war.
The American slave system was like none other in the history of existence. A group of people were permantely stripped of their identity and culture. Unlike whites, you can find only a handful of blacks (myself included) who could trace their ancestry as far back to the 17th century. We are still feeling the after effects of it and Jim Crow.
Point of fact, you are incorrect on the bolded portion (emphasis mine). If you recall your history lessons, slavery was extremely prolific in South America and the Caribbean during the same time it was active in the United States. In fact, Brazil was the most common destination for slaves during the Atlantic Slave Trade. Less than 4% of slaves were sent to the United States. A picture snapped by a parade-goer at a parade in Hope Mills NC shows a man on a tractor flying a confederate flag and pulling a wagon loaded with watermelons. A sign on the trailer read: “White History Month. Hug WTE PPL.”
Town officials said when the farmer applied for the parade permit he would be hawling watermelons with a sign they are for sale at a nearby bank.
Person driving tractor must be confused. Appears to be an American flag being flown [displayed} in the driver's hand, while a confederate flag is being flown {displayed} nearby.
Any rednecks I've ever known only display the confederate flag, and nothing else.
