Whats wrong with minimum wage keeping pace with inflation?

This law probably wont pass because it takes aim at corporations, without addressing the underlying issue: minimum wage just isnt enough to live on anymore (and it used to be).

From WaPO:

Quote:
“They promised they were going to start people at $13 an hour, and they said that over and over and over,” said the Rev. Graylan Hagler, senior pastor at Plymouth Congregational Church in Northeast Washington.

Wal-Mart spokesman Steven Restivo confirmed that the company plans to pay D.C. workers at least what it says it now pays full-time employees in suburban Virginia — an average of $12.39 an hour. He nonetheless called the council’s initiative an unfair bait-and-switch tactic.
If WalMart already pay $12.39 an hour in VA, they should have no problem with the $12.50 number in DC.

the the very same Dan River sheet set is 24.99 at walmart, but 34.99 at Macy's...you are overpaying at Macy's...esecially since they pay their people the exact same hourly rate

if that pair of Nike's is 50 dollars at walmat, an is 75 dollars at Nordstron, or fashion footwear..then you are overpaying at $75

So you're cheap. I get it. I just personally have no interest in paying for stuff made by children in Asia making 10 cents a day. I don't shop at Macy's or Nordstrom, and I sure as hell don't buy "fashion footwear." I just spend a lot of timing searching for reasonably good stuff, preferably made in America, and if not, at least in a reasonable facsimile of a Western nation.

As long as people keep rewarding China and Bangladesh for their atrocious labor practices, they'll happily beat children and build crappy factories that fall down to supply you with your stuff. And rewarding crappy employers like Walmart, instead of good ones like Costco, ensures that we'll continue to have crappy employers.

In fact, most large department stores have crappy records in things that matter to me. I buy from local people when I can, and second hand when I have to, to avoid Macy's, Nordstrom's, JC Penney, etc.

Contrary to what some folks here think, I'm not a communist so capitalism is where it's at for the US. But enlightened capitalism that rewards good behavior doesn't happen without people encouraging it. That's why I do what I do. You do what you do, I can't change your mind.

How about $7.99 lb steaks - buy one get two free? Or chicken breasts? Or pork chops?

There are so many ways to cut costs shopping at places other than Walmart. But, of course, if Walmart is the only game in town, too bad for you.
I don't want to do all that. I don't have time. I want to make apple to apple comparisons and move on. I tend not to buy meats at Wal-Mart. I generally stick to non perishables.

the real question is why would the politicians go after (SINGLE OUT) walmart, yet exempt other companies like sav-a-lot????

if DC city wants to set a min wage(or living wage) at ??$$, that's fine...but have it be toward EVERY COMPANY...not the WITCHHUNT they are doing against walmart

Wal-Mart is a dump that attracts trash. Trash brings crime. They deal with China. They're slime with their employees & benefits. I'm surprised conservatives would even support such a filthy corporation.

Really? You're surprised? The con mantra is "Whatever it takes to make a buck." Walmart is the poster child, hence the adoration from the right.

Mininum wage IS enough to live on if added to a spouse that works a legitimate full-time career.

This is true. They have no soul, no sense of decency or ethics. What was I thinking?
