After reading some of these posts I am ashamed of where America is headed. No respect for the elderly, no compassion, just contempt.
Fortunately I live in a country whose culture actually reveres the elderly. While I personally would never hangout at a McDonalds, I have better things to do, to each their own. I haven't been in a McDonalds since 2016. I do have a weakness for the McRib sandwich.
These people in their 70's are looking at their end days. Many if not most of their friends are gone. Probably shipped off to a nursing home after signing the house over to their kids. My Grand father lived to be 102 years old. I remember he in a moment of weakness shared that all his friends were gone. All his siblings were gone. All the cousins he grew up with, were gone. The world changed and he was stuck on it. That was a sad day for me. He passed away a few weeks later.
WE begrudge these old people their gatherings. Instead of begrudging them, lets build them a place to gather. It can sell coffee and snacks to pay for the power and water.
The country I live in it is normal to loiter after the meal and socialize. We meet for dinner at 5 and often stay until 8 or 9.
I can't read the article but is it new? It comes up over and over and I'll say what I always say...get out old timers. Your age doesn't give you a pass.
EDIT: Just realized the article AND the thread are 6 yrs old.

The last 10 pages though are within the last 7 months.

This ^^^
Edit to add: The culture you describe and the one in Queens are likely similar, Koreans who spend that much time together doing nothing but talking and drinking coffee. I believe much of this cultural. In the U.S., we are far more private people, largely because we are not a homogeneous group of people like many Asian countries, and we lack the same communal tastes.

While you and I disagree often, we always manage to disagree in a civil manner. You are correct about the Koreans and the Asians in general. It is sad that we went from a nation who also revered our elderly, to a nation that says get out. Those old people worked their entire lives . Now they gather to drink coffee and talk. In other words to take time to do what they couldn't do when they has to work to feed and support their families. Now the generations who benefitted from the senior's labor begrudge them this small thing. It is sad.
Local communities throughout the US have senior centers. Some even provide low cost or free door to door transportation to/ from.
This is especially challenging in densely populated urban areas with high commercial rents or land costs.
Senior centers require a structure, staffing, cleaning, maintenance, heating, cooling, plowing, insurance, reserves for replacing mechanicals, roofs etc. it is not a minor undertaking. Such places are primarily funded by property taxes and government agency grants.

LOL we all have a weakness hahaha. I can't stand anything else they serve. Same is true of BK. I do love a good Wendy's burger and a frosty.
Im sad that we think so little of the elderly. People should remember, that will be them someday.
