The screen shot of the healthcare.gov red Terminate button must be a fake.
Notice how under the Terminate button it says that pushing that button would "end your coverage" from all plans listed above.
So when you push the button, and then confirm, it's supposed terminate your coverage. Not one word on there about needing to call the insurance company.
And then on the next page, you have to actually check a box saying that you understand that this will terminate your coverage and that could leave you open to "tax implications," ie. being taxed for not having coverage, because, well, you terminated your plan.
I've been to the healthcare.gov website five times in the past two days. I've brought up "my plans & coverage", and the "terminate" button isn't there. But I do stand corrected, it may well have been there for the Missouri woman, when she visited the site. However, I stand by my contention that she should have contacted the insurance company directly to cancel her insurance. I stand by that because I have a plan and policy in hand that I purchased, and the insurance company itself has guidelines telling you how to cancel your plan. And every time I've ever cancelled insurance, I've had to follow the insurance company's instructions.
I apologize to everyone on this thread. I was out of line calling this woman "stupid". While I do think that it is simple common sense to at some point contact the insurance company, and she did not do this, I was unaware that there was a "terminate" button on the website. I thought that the screens on the website were the same for everyone, and evidently I was stupidly making an assumption. The "terminate" option does not come up for me, and it may be that the website functions differently for people from different states, but in any case, I should not have been so adamant that no such button existed.
