Judge in Pennsylvania strikes down voter ID law

Quote:
Judge Bernard McGinley of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania ruled against
the state’s strict voter ID law last week following a lengthy trial last summer.
The law had been temporarily blocked since
last October pending a full trial. The ruling is a big win for voting rights and
a clear setback for voter ID supporters.

Judge McGinley found that the law violated the state constitution because
hundreds of thousands of registered voters lacked the restrictive forms of ID
required by the state, few had obtained the requisite ID since the law’s passage
in March 2012, the state had not made it easy to get an ID and there was no
evidence of in-person voter fraud to justify the burdens of the law.
.................................................. ............
Nor did the state present evidence to justify the new voter ID law. The state “wholly failed to show any evidence of in-person voter fraud,” McGinley wrote. “Certainly a vague concern about voter fraud does not rise to a level that justifies the burdens construction here. Therefore, this Court does not find in-person voter fraud a compelling interest the Voter ID Law was designed to serve.”

I think voter ID's are quite different, the last thing we should be doing is excluding legitimate voters or making it more difficult to vote. Filling out a healthcare application can be done from home maybe they can do the same for voters.

If you read through the decision PA has not made the case that a problem even existed. Only 17,000 register for voter ID's out of a few hundred thousand, that pretty much says it all.

Every state seeking to enact voter ID laws should also put in a place a system that will make it easier for residents to obtain the requisite ID. Unfortunately, the judiciary is resistant to something as simple as requiring an ID, so States must grease the skids in order to pass legal muster. That's the sad truth.

First of all many of those people may have had other forms of ID including long term care home ID, student ID, military ID etc. Secondly it doesn't account for fraudulent or invalid registrations who are never going to get a ID.... According to Pew nationwide 24 million voter registrations are invalid or significantly innaccurate.

Lastly the comment about it being too hard is complete BS. Here's the requirements for a voting only ID:
Quote:
Persons who want the new Department of State Voter ID will need to provide their
  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Social Security number (If the customer has been issued an SSN)
  • County
  • Previous name and/or address if changed in the past 12 months.
Oh the horror.... This decison is probably going to be appealed.

lol, I'll bet if they attached it to welfare and Obamacare they could register. Gotta give em a freebie then again, what difference does it make. Those voters would vote for whoever promised more free stuff anyway.

No one has ever proved that a problem existed, in any state of the union. But the GOP continues to insist that it's out there … somewhere … maybe lurking in the bushes …

Why should they have to, when it's not a problem?

I mean, hell, why was it so hard for blacks to answer a few simple questions in order to be allowed to vote?

And the only one who's ever called me a moron is you. You're such a charmer.
