I don't seeing many baristas doing this just because it would be too awkward for many of them. With that said, I couldn't tell you the last time I was in a Starbucks because Portland has much better coffee than Starbucks could ever offer.
I go to Starbucks because it's right across the street from where I work. I get their large iced americano's. I actually prefer their iced americano's over my favorite local coffee shop. However, when it comes to actual coffee or lattes, the local will win everytime. The only reason I'm not going to my local shop is because it's the opposite way of where my work is which really is too bad. And I don't think of Starbucks as a liberal place to go, I think of it as a suburbanite place to go. Truly, I envision all the suburbanites flocking there in their suffocating suburbs. Anyway, when is this supposed event happening because so far, I haven't seen it this week.
Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has never shied away from voicing his political opinions. But now the outspoken leader of the world's biggest coffee chain is taking on one of the most heated topics of today: race relations.
On Sunday, Starbucks published a full page ad in USA Today with the words “Shall We Overcome?†on a stark, black background to kick off its initiative.
This was followed Monday by a company directive where baristas are being encouraged to spark race discussions with the option to handwrite the words “Race Together†on a customer’s cup.
Why not, Holder and Obama along with their pal sharpton haven't done any better than you might imagine what a barista could do.
Well then, can McD's put something like.... "Support your offspring".. "Pay your own way".. "It ain't your money".. "Take pride in earning your own money"... "Don't go for the cops gun, you'll live longer"... "If you want it you got to pay for it".
When two people begin talking to each other, race becomes less important than it was before the talking started. One person may like the other, or not, but it becomes a difference between individuals, not races. And people of good will are the same regardless of their color.
Conversation creates mutual respect and mutual civility. Old fears and generalizations, the roots of bigotry in all it's forms, being to wither in the presence of polite conversation, as we are all more similar than different in most aspects of our lives.
There's no harm in a business asking it's employees to do a little conversing when it's appropriate. Coffee is a beverage that has always been a conversation starter among strangers everywhere. Starbuck's is not only doing the right thing socially, it's also doing something helpful for it's business. It's all win-win, and I hope other businesses begin encouraging the same.
So what is a barista? Anyone who can sell you a cup of coffee?
