This is not an age-appropriate topic for a 4 year old. It goes in the same category as calculating compound interest, describing corpses, controlled substances, etc. Facts of life, but too advanced for that age.
There are plenty of topics that are age-appropriate, I question the judgment of that preschool if they can't find other subjects to teach at that age.
This is the one way street bigot PRog-Agressives have created.
Don't like it when they teach your 4 year old about homosexuality? suck it. leave. whatever.
on the other side, when you don't teach it, or you believe its a sin, you lose your job. you lose your life.
We are all free to do as the Bigot PRog-Agressives tell us we must do. We are free to think as the PRog-Agressives tell us to think
Its the new FREEDOM man!
It was a private school. Freedom is irrelevant in this regard. They can kick people out if they refuse to follow their curriculum. If you don't like what is taught at a school, why would the solution not be to leave? Explain that for me.
If I had kids, which I don't, and they told my kid in science class that evolution is a lie, my kid would not be in that school because it's obviously not educating people.
As for teaching it's a sin, if a private school wants to teach that, so be it. I don't agree with it and I frankly think it's funny to call such a close minded institution a school, but I can't stop it from happening. Public school is a little different. Teacher's in public school cannot teach what is sin because it's for the public, not a specific audience.
You are free to send your kid to a school that uses the philosophy of 4,000 year old Middle Eastern men if you choose. You are not free to put that philosophy into public education. I fail to see the controversy in that.

And why isn't it appropriate for that age? What reason makes talking about same sex couples inappropriate, yet traditional couples are acceptable to talk about? What separates them?

Why is it ok to talk to them about parts of the body, but not body parts from violent crime scenes? How about radiometric dating and intelligent design?
We live in a society where some topics are simpler to understand than others. Save the more complex and controversial topics for when they're more capable/older. You're not doing your kids any favor by reading them Milton and Shakespeare before One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.
This in no way means that teaching your kids about violence, science, or Shakespeare is wrong. Just work on the fundamentals first.
