In Britain, they refer to Pakistanis as Asians, since they technically are. This is done intentionally to obscure the identities of the troublemakers in Britain.
Obscure what about identities? That they're Asian?
Asian in the UK means Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan etc.
Chinese, Japanese etc. are referred to as Oriental not Asian.
What's it obscuring? That the perps were ethnically Asian? You know that Asian doesn't mean Islamic don't you? Hinduism is based in Asia, its not Islam, Buddhism is based in Asia, its not Islam, Sikhism is based in Asia, and even though they wear turbans it's not Islam either. If you see an Asian how do you tell their religion?
Now calling them Asian may obscure identities for Americans, but since this is from a UK source, they're probably using UK terminology. If only to confuse Americans.
When Americans say "Asian" we mean East Asian or Southeast Asian. As I understand it, when Britons say "Asian" they mean South Asian, i.e. India, Pakistan, etc.
It sure would be nice if we could come up with terms that would accurately differentiate people from different parts of a vast continent who look and behave quite differently from each other. Well, we did used to have "Oriental," but that's gone out of fashion here in the U.S. Maybe we could learn to say "East Asian" or "South Asian" and help clear up the confusion.

I always wondered why Obama got rid of the word "oriental"

I doubt the respectable media still uses "oriental" to describe suspects in the UK.

What's wrong with using the term Middle Eastern? Do Britons not use that term?
Europe is just western Eurasia. Will they start calling everyone a Eurasian now? That will certainly be informative.
