It's not that hard, really.
"Oriental" wasn't that hard either until someone somewhere decided it was somehow offensive for some yet unexplained reason. It was also more specific than "Asian."

Then I suppose for centuries "The Orient" was just an object instead of a region? Last time I was on their web site "The Orient Express" was still showing massive interest ........among orientals!

Orient = "object" = utter nonsense!

You clearly have no idea about Asians . He may be middle eastern or even from countries like Tunisia or Egypt or even Turkey.

Pakistanis wouldn't have such weird hair style or beard..

On a funny note, he looks like Roberto Carlos the Brazilian footballer

Because "Asian" is both non-specific and unfairly lumps Orientals with other, violent, Asian cultures. The fast majority of Russia is in Asia, but we rarely refer to Russians as Asian. Do you put the same effort to describe someone as Norwegen, British, German, etc? Or do you describe the region (northern European)?

They are not lumped together, it's largely generic and avoids labelling people when their identity is not fully established. An Indian would not want to be described as a Pakistani and vice versa etc nor would a Palestinian want to be called Jewish. Do you want the police and press to change their policy to the extent that they say we are looking for a Jew etc, as that type of thing generally causes idiotic people to sometimes take revenge on innocent members of a community and can cause further violence.

Of course such language is not acceptable which is why is you had read the thread from the start the police use generic terms in terms of skin colour, hair colour, age, weight, height, what they were wearing and distinguishing features such as tattoos etc. They even released a picture of two suspects one who has already been charged and remanded in custody by the Magistrates to appear at the Crown Court, the other is still helping police with their inquires.

Sadly the OP doesn't seem to be able to take this on board or simply wants to cause controversy where there is none.

IC codes - Wikipedia

The UK Police Identification Codes (IC Codes)

IC1 White - North European

IC2 White - South European

IC3 Black

IC4 South Asian

IC5 Chinese, Japanese, or other Southeast Asian

IC6 North African or Arabic

IC9 / IC0 Unknown

So here you go,
Are you worried about the men here being White, black, Chinese etc?
I'm saying that to characterize this man as Asian is far too vague to be helpful. It would be far more helpful to describe him in terms of his features. It would be like describing a Hispanic or African American person as North American.

I've also asserted the opinion that he looks to be of Arab or North African descent, not Pakistani. Now that I see his name is Arabic I feel even more strongly about it. And, because of that, I think that it is not helpful in the least to describe him as Asian.

To characterize my position as somehow racist or tied to a "Stormfront" perspective is asinine.

They showed a photo of both individuals in this case, and when they don't have a photo use a computer generated photofit, they don't have to describe anyone in any precise detail if they have a photo or photofit.

Furthermore you live in the US, so why are you so concerned with the policy of the British Police or press, you seem to have some kind of unplesant agenda.

As for the suspects name it is South Asian and not Middle Eastern.
