Suppressing that official request would have caused even a bigger firestorm if it was discovered that AAG's request was purposefully ignored. Comey was then pressed into action because of it which he didn't mind since it was so close to the election and it seemed Clinton's win was irreversible. Remember, there were hundreds of thousands of emails on that laptop.

No doubt, if nothing was done, it would have leaked. And rightfully so.

Comey should have been fired in July. He savaged Clinton while having absolutely no basis for doing so. He compounded that in October.

One may argue he should not have been fired over the Russian investigation but he should have been gone by then.

That's going to be really tough because Mueller would have to send his report to Rosenstein who's the one who advised Trump to fire Comey in the first place.
