If she had continued as before, people could have plausibly stretched to believe that she believed she was above the fray, that her family story was a good enough answer/she didn't owe anyone any other explanation, and that Trump was the one 'going there' by using the Pocahontas moniker...but she didn't do that.
By getting an analysis, she gave credibility to her critics.
If she really, truly believed that she wasn't in the wrong re her previous actions and reactions, she would have told her critics to take a flying leap at the moon, rather than giving in.
She should have at least waited until after the November elections before stepping into this minefield. Trump and the pubs will have a field day with the 1/1024 number. Plus Hilary is back in the spotlight giving new meaning to the word "hypocrisy" as she claims that Bill did nothing wrong having an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The Dems are on the verge of retaking the house and now these two crazy women are trying to botch the deal. The Dems are like the '62 Mets--"can't anyone here play this game"?
Senator Warren had said that she had Native American in her background; she does. From what I have read, she never claimed to be a member of a tribe for purposes of school/employment purposes.
If 1/1024th is what she meant by "in her background" then she cannot be trusted in anything she says from now on. Every time she makes a claim, people will question the degree. If she claims a proposed bill will create jobs, people will ask if that means it will create a significant number of jobs or just two jobs. If she claims to have experience doing something, people will ask if that means she spent a fair amount of time doing it or just for a couple minutes one day. This is the real damage she has inflicted on herself.
Yes, she did. The assertion that she is Native American could only have come from her. 10+ years of Warren telling lies for her own professional advantage. That's pure BS, and I would be angry, too, as the Cherokee nation is at Warren's egregious racial abuse.
She didn't list herself. She has native American ancestry and her parents even eloped because of it, because it was against the grandparents' rules to marry a native American. Whatever she wrote down about native American ancestry was when she was teaching at Harvard and Harvard chose to use it as evidence that they had minorities on their faculty. Harvard stretched the truth to their advantage, by the sounds of it. Stop blaming her. (Not that I am one of her fans, but just to be fair.)
I believe this story is a construct and not as she presents it. There was someone earlier in this thread who posted an excerpt by a genealogist who did Warren's family tree with appropriate forms etc (marriage certificates, forms, death certificates, etc). Her parents, grandparents, etc all listed themselves as white and not Native American. Basically, I'm saying she's full of it and flat out made up this story about supposed discrimination. It might have been something which caused her parents to elope but it wasn't because anyone was Native American because they were both white and had noted themselves as white.

.097656, would not point back to her grammy. It would point back to actual Pocahontas.
Her relatives in Tennessee, rounded up the stray Cherokee and put them on the Trail of Tears

She's not NDN. There is no proof that she has any NDN ancestry. None. Zip. Zero. Nada.
The original of the post above (not my quote above which...re how the system is...doesn't show the original embedded quote examples) is probably the clearest summary of the situation appearing on this thread.

"If there was shame associated with the marriage and it caused so many problems, why was it happily announced in the local paper and why did the town seem to celebrate the marriage of the two popular young people?"
Quite simply, her mother lied to little Elizabeth about their heritage and the elopement. I don't blame Elizabeth Warren for believing her mother, however this evidence has been laid out since 2012 and Elizabeth Warren is still trying to propagate the lie.
