The 2nd amendment wasn't a mistake, but it's outdated. Guns won't prevent government tyranny or aggression with modern military fire power (which filters down to local police).
Assault rifles, high capacity magazines, and other mods that improve killing capacity need to be banned.
Isn't a well regulated militia different from stockpiling weapons in your home? It says nothing of the sort in the amendment that that is okay. The intention is the people can bear arms under a well regulated militia.
I've read the amendment ad naseum and while the language is vague it actually alludes to forming local militiaries to keep the federal government at bay.
Using this logic, if San Jose, CA formed a militia I could sign up part-time and train on whatever weapons available. But it doesn't mean I can stockpile them in my house. The intention of the amendment was that if the federal government overreached and declared martial law using the army to bully our local district theoretically the San Jose militia could be used to protect the region's interest. Then I could show up at my local militia center with other local citizens don up in body armor and use whatever weapons available to fight the army.
WRONG.
It is the tight of the individual, which is why it's in the Bill of Rights.

The gun nuts have taken over our collective American asylum. The killing won't stop until we defeat them at the ballot box which I don't expect to see in my lifetime (unfortunately).
Living pathetic/boring lives these gun nuts want to attach a sense of grandeur to their lives. So they tell themselves it is their "sacred duty" to protect themselves from a tyrannical government.
Anything to make going to Applebee's with their obese wives more palpable. Yet, the biggest health threat they face is that burger they are chomping on for the 100th time at Applebee's.

The second amendment states:
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
While the second half states that people should be able to bear arms its a continuation from the first clause. A well regulated militia does not mean a bunch of private citizens stockpiling dangerous weapons in their closet and shooting whoever they feel like. It means literally forming a local militia to keep the federal government in check, and it must be well regulated.
Imagine for example if San Francisco decided they wouldn't deport anyone and during the next ICE raid the SF militia showed up with tanks and told the immigrations officers to get lost or be killed. Or if a farming district in Iowa refused to abide by the national tariffs and when threatened by the Federal government deployed it's local militia to make it's case.
That is what Jefferson envisaged by keeping power in the hands of the people.
