What you fail to realize is that the core of the product MIGHT be made here but the screws, etc are made in China, Mexico, etc. so your wrong even more so when you consider that the machines that make said item is made overseas. I work in a place where we make plastic goods for refrigerators, etc. and yes while the part is MADE here the parts and the press comes from China. That’s no always the case but the majority of the time that’s how it works.
I think they also closed them because they were not making money...like Trumps real estate, casinos, "university", airline and all the rest.
Normally - even in the USA (know-nothings) such hypocrisy would not be tolerated...even by his supporters. It's well known that he has used illegal labor HERE for decades, including today!
But with Trump cultists there is no line of ethics that cannot be crossed. That's the very idea of it. The nastier and more hypocritical they are, the more his fans approve.

That species of Import Certificate policy is substantially less government and more market-driven. All direct costs are passed on to USA's purchasers of imported goods and serve as effective indirect price subsidies for USA's exported goods.
The unilateral policy would significantly reduce, if not entirely eliminating our chronic great trade deficits of goods. It would increase our GDP, numbers of jobs and payroll amounts more than otherwise.

Made in USA and assembled in USA are not the same. Plenty of products are all USA. You're really reaching for the negatives.

Great values. And among many in metal working (I bought some of their sheet metal tools) they are considered quite good....and a community has even built up around modding some of their tools to do more!
The thing is, a lot of people don't use a tool daily, but they want it for the once or twice a year (or month) that they need it..saves them money. HF is great for that.
I have mostly mid-level Power tools as I used to be a real contractor and I have used them for additions and bigger projects. But now some of they sit for a year or two in between uses.

For once I can agree with you.
I was an industrial mechanic for 28 years. I can tell you that quality matters. When you make a living with said tools.
For the do it yourself kind of person? I bought a Harbor Freight Hammer drill. I needed to drill 72 holes 3 inches deep into concrete. It would be the last time I would ever need the drill that I could foresee. The drill worked perfectly. It cost be like $75 bucks back in 2002. I loaned it to an acquaintance to use and have never seen it since.
I live abroad now. I don't buy top shelf tools anymore because I have become that once or twice kind of tool owner. I try to avoid made in China. It's a challenge. Here is something that surprised me. The natives around me also try to avoid made in China. Even in Asia made in China = Crap.
Voluntarily buying American products has about as much hope as voluntarily paying more in taxes than is necessary. If you want people to buy American, you use tariffs to raise the price of foreign goods.
I mean - everyone knows that, other than some trucks, Detroit makes junk. Real Junk.
A bunch of bean-counters with no connection to the actual vehicles.

There are examples of American quality goods...many of them...but they are not Detroit made cars!
Funny to hear people reference "crap" from other countries while China is #2 in the world in Quantum Computing and many other AI technologies and makes a LOT of stuff that beats anything the US does...in fact, in many cases there simply is not US Product or Competitor.
If we want to talk killing machines or civilian aircraft...well, then we may have a claim. We can build some great stuff with that 22+ Trillion dollar deficit (see: war machines...and the general financing and bailing out of Boeing which allowed it to transfer the taxpayer tech to civilian).
I don't think we ever made great cars...the Model T and A were amazing due to simplicity and price/production numbers. We have made good locomotives and thousands of other machines. I'd say there was a golden age of American Manufacturing from about 1850 to 1950.
It can be done...but the problem in the USA is that our system is now built upon Wall Street - what are you going to make next quarter? The stock is more important than the product...and, as you will know, it takes decades to perfect an advanced machine or consumer goods.
I see all these american "Startups" and they pat themselves on the back and cheer....when they start the company the Founders already have an "exit strategy"!
Imagine if Henry Ford or Bezos or Jobs started their company with an "exist strategy" within 5-7 years?
That's a big problem...The Elon Musks are few and far-between and, even then, he's not getting the support from the Government that he should be. With a little more help his cars and rockets could be sold (or benefit) those 7+ Billion people on Earth and we could make them...or make the machines that make them, etc.
Food & beverage -- try to buy local first, region second, country third.
I tend to buy name brand stuff for toiletries......so American products. Not sure I would ever buy Chinese toothpaste & such...eeek.
Other stuff clothing, junk, etc. -- I never look.
I'm one of those that think we can trade with other countries and even operate with a trade deficit and still have a sustainable, even growing economy.
We just have to find our niche.
Producing massive amts. of cheap stuff doesn't have to be the only way a country's economy can thrive.
A lot of Chinese stuff are not cheap, they are cheaper than the overly expensive us made stuff. But their quality is equal or even better. Often American stuff are expensive and bad quality. I still remember my dad’s cutlass Sierra that he was so happy to own. It started to peel at less than 2 years old and when he tried to bring it into the shop that he bought the car from, they refused to even look at it. That’s crappy American stuff. I vowed never to ever buy an American made car ever in my life after that. To this day, I hve own several german and now a Swedish car owned by a chinese company. Never a ford or a gm ever for me.
