Oscar Wilde, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickenson were all gay. If you think that reading their literature and being told that they were gay is too controversial for teenagers to handle, well, I feel sorry for you, and I feel sorry for your kids too. What a boring life you must have had to feel that way.

Yes, it started in the U.S. in 1994. Guess you're a little out of touch.

I have been persecuted for atheism, but I wouldn't push for an "atheist awareness month", but it would be cool to have a Carl Sagan Day.

We should be having math month, science month, literature month, history month, etc. Just my $0.02.
Agreed, I have always felt like this. Let the parents teach their kids about sex. Period. I feel like there are real issues in our country that need to be addressed, and the fact that people are bickering over sexuality is unbelievable. All i could ever ask for is that people straight and gay just keep it to themselves. I'm not a big PDA guy, not that I mind people seeing me do it, I just don't like to see it being done, so i give the same respect. Kinda like chewing loud, slurping from a cereal bowl, or scraping your fork on your plate.
I hate that people are polarized on these issues. Outside of child sacrifice, beatings, and several other extreme things, why does ANYONE care what other people do in their own homes? Any how...

Our education system has proven itself inadequate already. They need to focus on the real fundamentals of learning and focus on core curriculum.

Children need to be taught age appropriate sex, but that's a whole other issue.

Anyone who thinks that it's too controversial for kids to know that Oscar Wilde, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickenson were gay.

Isn't this the same country that stopped teaching about the holocaust for fear of offending muslims? Now we hear that they will teach glbt just for kicks?

Something doesn't sound right...

The fact they were doesn't have anything to do with their masterpieces. Plus, that fact could be easily slipped in to a history course if of must be taught, just like I remember being taught Alexander the Great was gay. No need to dedicate a whole month to it, putting gays on some kind of pedestal.
