Your right it does cut both ways in many cases a Black American is likely to experience much more racism from a White or Asian person than they are from a Latino. All this animonsity doesn't happen in a vacum.

They want to associate with those in power and seem to adopt the attitudes with racism being one of them. It drives me crazy to see Mexicans and other Latin Americans mistreat Blacks. They don't know that I'm Mexican and that I understand Spanish so I hear what is being said and I just want to say to them and all others that want to come to the US and try this "These whites don't care about you either so realize we are in the same boat and find yourself!!!" It's crazy. And in reality, many whites have come a long way. How can immigrants treat Blacks with contempt when it we made it possible for EVERYONE to enjoy the rights they have now???!!!
Here's another thing that I notice. The Mexicans that have the most animosity toward Black Americans are first or second generation. I lived in San Antonio Texas for 11 years and experienced very little animosity between Mexican and Black Americans. I moved to Dallas and the vibe was completely different and the most noticable difference was with Mexicans that had been here the shortest amount of time.

First thing I have to say is that the title of the thread "Why do hispanics and cubans dislike black people ? (Obama, compared, economic)," is overinclusive. In Cuba as in any other country in this world there is discrimination, people discriminate others for the color of their skin, for the money they have, for being too skinny, for being too fat, for being a male or being a female, being gay or straight, etc, etc, etc. The one thing I can say in our defense is that the term CUBAN applies to people who as many say fit into that "black", "white," "mulatto," etc. group. So to say that all Cubans dislike "blacks" is just plain wrong, its like saying you dislike yourself. This is how we got here in the first place, people having preconceived ideas about what certain people who they want to fit into a category, might think. Have you ever thought that there are other reasons besides the color of his skin why people do not like Obama? Have you ever thought about people actually disliking his political views, specially Cubans who have lived in a socialist country and hear about the policies he wants to implement? I know there are many bigots and ignorant people everywhere, but if you do not want to be one of those be careful the next you generalize because you start sounding like those people that you criticize so much. The bottom line is that we all discriminate, we discriminate those that discriminate because of that same reason. We see a person on the street and sometimes by the way they look you know if you want to associate with them or not. The problem arises when we generalize and have the "I am holier than thou" attitude, we think of that person as the "other" so separate from ourselves that we think we are better than them. After taken courses on the subject, race is something that a person or persons made up, and you can look this up, to classify and in my opinion sunjugate other people. Scientists do not think that we are so different biologically and see the term "race" as a problematic way to classify humans. I laugh every time I see an application or some form of writing where you are asked to choose your race and there is the word "latino" or "hispanic." I think to myself that the term was originally made up to classify those that either have some common thread with latin languages or those who speak Spanish, but now it is being used in the United States to include a wide range of people that have different skin colors. So sometimes I check at least three boxes, just to make it easier for them to classify me. The world is an imperfect place and there is injustice everywhere, but please people be a bit more open-minded and do not think that because someone might fit into a little box in your head, you know their likes and dislikes. I believe that education/knowledge is the greatest power we can have because when it comes to me at least it has made me tolerant of many cultures. I meet from people from so many countries and find that I have something in common with each and everyone of them and respect their opinions about me when they are informed and when they are not I try to educate them.

People sadly don't need much of a reason to hate people different from them. Generally in my experience with latinos they are at least as likely to identify with black people as they are to shun them. Only rarely have I experienced any form of racism from latinos. In fact many Cubans and other Caribbean latinos acknowledge and embrace the African element to their culture. Dominicans are the ones I've seen reject them more often. Some of them are a spitting image of Desmond Tutu saying "I'm not black." But for the most part I have little problems with latinos, especially the women. They naturally tend to embrace you much quicker when you're conversational in Spanish.

The degree of interracial or inter-ethnic relationships does not necessarily mean racial or ethnic harmony in fact in many times the opposite.

The Jews of 1930s had an out marriage rate of 60%. If Hitler had left well alone the German Jewish population would have practically disappeared on its own. The Tutsi and Hutus of Rwanda had been intermarrying for hundreds of years.

Also your observation of Hispanic women do not bear out statistically. There have been studies done on the dating preferences of the races and ethnicities in regards to online dating. Basically all women except Black women have a strong preference for white men.

Frankly the fact that you may not see so many DR/PR women with white men may simply be that white men do not view these women as marriage material. After all in the case of Dominican women they have a significant degree of African ancestry and we know white men are least likely to marry black women. It doesn't necessarily mean that DR/PR women don't desire white men.

White women prefer white men to the exclusion of everyone else, and Asian and Hispanic women prefer them even more exclusively. These three categories of women respond well only to white men. "More significantly," OkCupid reports, "these groups’ reply rates to non-whites is terrible. Asian women write back non-white males at 21.9%, Hispanic women at 22.9%, and white women at 23.0%." And, while white women have an "above-average compatibility" with almost every group, they reply well only to "guys who look like them."

1) Latin America never had a "One Drop Rule" where "one drop" of African Blood makes you a "Black" person socially. Thus Mulattoes don't have to acknowledge there African blood IF they are light enough. So the idea is to graduate to Whiteness by "Whitening" your Bloodline (You figure it out what that means).

2) Also, the social concept of Blackness doesn't really exist. That's why many mixed race latinos are so racist. Being Black by most latinos, even those of African or partial African descent is seen in one way, BAD.

3) Unlike the United States where people of African descent have attempted to rally round Black of being for the purpose of achvieving equal rights, Blacks in Latin American haven't got that far yet. The conditions that many of them live under are like pre civil rights America. So most White/Mestizo/Light Mulattoes feel secure in there racist ways. Also nationality is used over race many times. So issues of racial often get written off push into ambiguity.

4) Combine this with good ol' fashion American prejudice toward all things Black.

Bravo!! Best post here.

Let's be straight. There are many people of hispanic ethnicity who are white or caucasian in race. In the case of Latin America, there was alot of mixing which created a broad spectrum of skin shading. Now of course the Spaniards and Portuguese set up a hierarchal society there based on race/skin color so they could stay on top. This was smart in that since the majority of the population where mixed with European, they could really never come to rally in protest against their oppressors, as they would feel like they would betray their superiorly perceived European partial background. Now let's get to who's white and who's not.

It is a fallacy for people to claim that in the USA, your not considered white unless you look northern European viking blonde yode to Oden Aryan. Don't forget that Italians are both counted, considered and widely accepted as white. Add to the fact that there aren't that many white hispanics here, the arguement of "why don't you think we're white like you John Smith, pleeeessseee, we really are white!!! Be careful, because to others outside this mindset, it looks rather pathetic. If your a white hispanic you will automatically be treated as a white person in general, in America, so don't worry about it. If they see your names Gonzales and say "really, I thought you where white". Just say that the United States isn't the only place in the world where Europeans emigrated to. Tell them that Spain is in Europe and Europe is the homeland of the white people. So don't worry so much, O.K.!! Now let's talk about those hispanics who are almost white and cry about it.

If Italians are on the extreme spectrum of what a "white person looks like", then near white hispanics are NOT WHITE IN THE USA, PERIOD!! I'm taking about people like who look like this;

Hot Topics: Hispanic Heritage Month (http://govdocs.evergreen.edu/hotopics/hispanicheritage/ - broken link)

vs. people who look like this;

http://img117.exs.cx/img117/8945/sic...apani032or.jpg

close but NO.

I lived in Miami for 8 years and know for a fact hispanics (dark and light) generally look down on blacks (it's more subtle with black hispanics). And don't think it's just the black white color spectrum that matters to white Americans. In San Francisco the white people would accept an Asian waaaayyyy before they would accept a near white hispanic. Each American region has it's own odd form of racism based on the white-black history of the area and the type of immigrants coming in to there and the state of race observence back in their home lands. Racism is definitely not a straight and forward phenomena.

Personally though, I would rather deal with the racism in America than Latin America. Imagine having no voice in dealing with racial injustice, where even the people like you are racist against you. Therefore, besides a lucky few, you would be stuck in a socio-economic nightmare with no escape.

I've seen well to do blacks in South Florida treated like dirt on many of occasion. That 500 year old racial Conquestador paradigm is still very much alive in Latin America. If a darker looking white in America where told they aren't white, they generally wouldn't give a damn. Some would even welcome it. That knowledge is what makes me very sad at how hispanics base their esteem on being accepted as white. As soon as borderline hispanics stop crying about this, is when I would start to think their finally coming into the 21st century.
