Why not? I think that it should be free. I don't think we should restrict people the opportunities that come with an advanced degree simply because they came from a background in which they lack the resources...
Property taxes pay for K-12..should they be increased for K-16 now ?
Costs still have to be paid regardless.
We spend approx 40% of the US budget on defense. France's tuition isn't free, but it's MUCH less.
I don't see the logic in how much tuition costs in general. This hurts our nation, not helps...
But schools are state budget items..not Fed.
The state would have to budget the cost of college and have the state's citizens pay either in the form of a state tax or property tax.

Shouldn't the federal government possibly, say call me crazy, spend some of the hyper inflated defense spending on higher education?
They already do. But they can't even afford what they do today to K-12 via NCLB.
Nope..taxpayer will have to foot the bill for your proposal.
State tuitions are not regulated at a Fed level nor governed at a Fed level..it's all state for colleges.
So let's spend nearly 40% on defense? That's a better allocation of funds? I know it's a state institution, however, I feel that allotting some money either to the institution or the students (more grants, scholarships) is a good way to decrease college drop out rate, thus help continue to solidify the US as a core research nation.
