I think the truth is beginning to emerge. Apparently you don't consider apartheid to be oppression, or that the blacks and other nonwhite people in South Africa were oppressed by the whites.

I don't think you know much about South Africa nor have you ever been there.
Apartheid South Africa got a bad rap but keep in mind that the crime rate was lower under apartheid and Blacks weren't living in an "impoverished state," Black South Africans were living a standard of living higher than anywhere in Africa. Hell, hundreds of thousands of Blacks immigrated to apartheid South Africa for jobs. Obviously it couldn't have been too bad if people were pouring in! Furthermore, the continent's largest hospital was built in a Black township, Soweto! Schools were established so the Zulu and Xhosa could have a written language and an education.
In fact, the entire reason South Africa is the continent powerhouse is because the Whites who came and established the infrastructure.
Before Whites arrived (the Dutch and the British) the native tribes were still hunting with spear. In the case of the Zulu they were brutally slaughtering neighboring tribes and subjugating them. When Whites arrived on the Cape (Which wasn't inhabited btw, the Boers ran into the Xhosa and Zulu when they moved East because the British began to take over their land on the cape). Of course the British attacked the Boers again when they found Gold in their new free states.

It was because of apartheid that South Africa didn't end up like the other country's in sub-Saharan Africa. There was infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and modern conveniences that were never there.
Now post-apartheid corruption is rampant and crime has skyrocketed tremendously, that's why Whites are afraid. Apartheid kept Black crime from Whites and mainly affected Blacks killing each other, now Whites have to face the Black criminals as well.
If things don't change and the White population continues to flee abroad - South Africa could end up like Zimbabwe and also cement the belief that Blacks are incapable of governing - even when given an established country.

We are talking about crime in South Africa at present. What is more likely to make people angry, something that happened hundreds of years ago, or things they have themselves seen and experienced over the last 20 - 50 years?

What is happening to the farmers in Zimbabwe is very tragic, there were agreements drawn up that are not being honored. There are two sides to every story though, and just remember those farms are placed on land that was taken from black Zimbabweans who had lived there for generations without compensation in the early 1900's. These issues are not as simple as you are insinuating.
