I felt Tepper made this decision weeks ago and the embarrassment of losing to Washington gave him an out to pull the trigger.
He did. According to this article, the loss to the Falcons in Charlotte put the target on Rivera's back and the Redskins game convinced him to pull the trigger.
The Panthers continued playing BS football yesterday. No offense, no defense, and Christian McCaffrey and Luke Kuechly missing in action were unacceptable.
I do not know who was calling calls on defense this game. If it was Eric Washington, who we know cannot coordinate a defense, this would be his week to get fired.

Only thing I’m going to say about today’s game....Vernon Butler’s gesture after being ejected was the same thing this team has done the last month of the year. They’ve called it a year and they don’t care. I’m glad I was spared from watching this one due to traveling.
What do you Panther fans think of Tepper not letting Rivera finish the season?
Is this new owner an A-hole?
I initially didn't agree with the way he did it, but after Tepper explained why he fired him early, it made sense IMO. Given how fast Rivera was scooped up by another team, I don't think he has any complaints, either. Truth be told, I think Rivera knew his days with the Panthers were numbered after that Redskins game.
Tepper said the decision to fire Rivera now -- instead of letting the organization's winningest coach and a two-time NFL Coach of the Year finish the season -- was made so that Tepper could move forward with finding a replacement without going behind Rivera's back.
"I thought it was time,'' Tepper said. "Why specifically now is I was informed of other teams doing different types of searches out there, and I'm not going to start a search and not tell Ron Rivera I'm starting a search. Too good of a man.''
I think Rivera screwed himself by going to work under Dan Snyder, though.

I don't think so. He gave Rivera 2018 and most of 2019, so it's not like he just bought the team and cleaned house immediately. It was pretty evident that the team couldn't win without Cam at full health, and once they started losing home games to bad teams like Atlanta and Washington, it was clear that a change needed to be made.

I think if you’ve made the conclusion the man ain’t going to be a part of the franchise’s future, the merciful thing is to let him go once you’ve reached that conclusion. Tepper wanted to get a head start on the search, Ron was going to be in demand. I think it worked out great for both since Ron has a job.
