This is fantastic news, with the out of control growth in this county I am happy to see some tax dollars diverted to preserving green space. Although I must admit I'm surprised.

what parts of growth do tax dollars get spent on that has to be "diverted" towards green space?
$23MM is a joke, unless some significant portion of it is for the aforementioned school. I don't know how that works though, since a new school costs about $23MM all by itself now.
2 years ago, this is what the owners said:
Quote:
“We’d be willing to talk to them, or any other serious buyer,” Killen said. “But it has to be more in the $5 million range, not the $400,000 range".
a small group of CC owners had offered them $400K.

If only there was a way to provide more funding for schools and parks...
Orange County tax rate: 0.8377
Durham County tax rate: 0.7679
Wake County tax rate: 0.615
Isn't this a serious oversimplification?
Just quick facts:
Wake County is 857 sq mi (so land mass that can get taxed), has an annual budget of $1,260MM, and a population of 1,024,000. We spend $1,230 for every citizen.
Durham County is 401 sq mi (< 1/2 the size), has an annual budget of $435MM, and 301,000 population. They spend $1,440 for every citizen.
Orange County is 298 sq mi (1/3 the size), has an annual budget of $251MM, and a population of 141,000 (1/7th of Wake). They spend $1,780 for every citizen.
Reading Proficiency, Elementary: Wake's best, and it's not even close.
Wake: 66.7%
Durham: 43.4%
Orange: 58.3%
Math Proficiency, Elementary: Wake's best, but Orange is close
Wake: 64.7%
Durham: 40.6%
Orange: 62.5%
I'm sure you can find the total value of properties taxed to see just how much revenue they generate, but with Wake easily having the highest density, I feel sure we have an outsized revenue base.
It's a lot of work to drill down to student populations and how much each county spends, what if any stipends they give teachers, etc. Feel free to look it all up.
The fact that Wake has to rely on multi-track year round schooling to house all the students in the district is all the evidence I need to see that it has chronically underfunded schools dating back nearly 20 years.

3.95M for the land, 15M - 20M to develop and maintain the park.
So I assume you would also be against the Dix Park project? That land cost 50M plus an estimated 150M to develop.
they don't need to spend much, if any $$ on development. It's there.
it's got bathroom facilities, and it has a "park center" aka old clubhouse. Maybe $100K max to spiff that stuff up, unless there's been a heckuva lot more deferred maintenance to the clubhouse than has been said.
But I want to know where they're spending "growth money", so some dollars are being diverted from greenspace.
I was indeed against taking all 306 acres of Dix and refusing to allow any of it to be developed to help pay for the project. Now you're telling me an undeveloped park costs $500K an acre to develop? In what way?
At worst, we could sorely use small parts of both places - where land cost becomes $0 - to build some affordable housing.
