I just plan to be outside and watch it get dark (the band will pass directly over my house). I have no desire at my age to take a chance of damaging my eyes by trying to view the actual transit over the sun.

Sleep in car.

I just read bad reviews of the hotel I reserved, so I checked around on Booking to see what's still out there - there were some as of yesterday, but terribly expensive.

I think that driving that morning may be cutting it too close with traffic.

I am trying to decide between Charleston, Columbia, Clemson and further northwest in the NC mountains. The biggest concern I have is that logistically, it would be a lot easier to just find a big parking lot and just stay there without moving if you are walking distance to hotels, grocery stores, malls, parks, etc.... but I am afraid that since it falls on a weekday, that in addition to the city parking rates, that any and all other private or business lots will be charging outrageous prices to let people park. It could really rack up to be too expensive if traffic is as bad as it might be and you cant leave once your'e there. Columbia would probably be the best, but it has the worst chance of being cloudy. Have to wait a few more days for the forecasts to get a little more reliable for each location, I guess.

Got an email from Amazon this morning saying they’ve been unable to confirm the eclipse glasses I bought last month meet certification standards, so they issued a refund. No return needed. Nice to see they’re being proactive about it.

We are 100 miles south of Charleston, NC. We will go out in our backyard and see if we can see anything. If not, too bad.

If you are 100 miles south of Charleston, North Carolina, you probably are in the center of the eclipse path. Stay home.

There's an app for that:
Search for
eclipse2017.org
on either app site.
Here's a map for your PC of western NC:

I was surprised to find different map sites giving different locations for Charleston, NC, one near Cherokee, one near Wilson. Why so coy about your location?
Anyway, the link I posted will show you the totality coverage wherever you are.

Personally I like this web site the best. Just put in your zip code and watch. We will have 93% in our zip code.
