As far as middle schoolers, no I hear all about all the stupid things they do from my DD (also rising 8th grader). Of course we don't live in Chapel Hill so that's probably why.
As a rebellious middle schooler, if you told me not to do something, it was more likely that I would do it
Thread is great but way too long. What's the summary in terms of places to go to see max eclipse that is most easily accessible from this area, for a day trip?
I think you overestimate the thought process of the average toddler....they don't care whether it's impressive or not and probably don't think in those terms, if it's hyped to them, they are going to be interested, and if they're told don't look at the sun without glasses, you can damn well bet the farm they will be looking at the sun whilst sliding down that slide or throwing sand in the sandbox. If it were me, I would just not mention anything to the preschoolers.
That's right. I wouldn't tell them anything about it either, because you can bet your bippy they'll be looking at the sun with the naked eye if they get a chance.
Well, I have wavered between thinking I'd go to a hotel near the band of totality, to turning it into a day trip with a friend, to now thinking the traffic will indeed be awful and maybe it's better to go down the night before...anyone else doing the back-and -forth?

Yes, exactly, and that's why I hope to get some solid advice/thoughts from those who are informed about it. I'm w you.
At this point I imagine it’ll be nearly impossible to get a hotel in or close to the band. Even two weeks ago when I last checked, the hotel search engines were showing no rooms at all. Might be able to look into an Airbnb, but it’ll be exorbitant.

Yeah, I don't think there are hotels left. I saw one room about 3 weeks ago, but I didn't jump on it and it disappeared. We decided to drive down from Charlotte.
