Though they didn't win outright majorities, Saige Martin and Jonathan Melton have won their seats because their opponents, Kay Crowder and Russ Stephenson respectively, decided against runoffs. Both Martin and Melton are young progressives who identify as gay, the first two Raleigh council members to do so.
(Also, but not noted in this article, Mary-Ann Baldwin has avoided a runoff and become mayor-elect as Charles Francis decided not to challenge her.)
But, what police reform is needed in Raleigh? And the first guy has never held a W2 employee or as an employer. They were all either government type jobs or campaign jobs.
I'm curious how he thinks he is qualified to state the things he says, specifically about small business and housing.
Reminds me of a certain someone in NY elected as a congresswoman.
I could care less about their private lives - all that matters is how they do their elected day job.
Also they have as much experience as the eldest remaining member of city council, Mr. Cox, when he ran on a single platform issue (the Publix at the corner of Falls of Neuse & Dunn). I'm glad to have some younger representation on CC

Hard to believe there haven’t been LGBTQ council members in Raleigh before. I know Chapel Hill had an openly gay council member in the 70s! I’m sure Durham has had LGBTQ officials for a long time too.
Now if only we could get rid of the homophobic town council member in my triangle town, he voted against acknowledging pride month. Super sad because this guy is only 37 and not accepting of gays. It DID end up passing with the votes of others thankfully.

Once Francis decided not to require a runoff, Stephenson was in an impossible position. A city-wide runoff would be expensive, and he'd be criticized roundly for requiring one. When Crowder dropped out, the pressure got worse.
