Some people are just extremely nice and are always being sweet, and then you have some people who pretend to be nice/charming and aren't that nice. How do you tell the difference?

Fake nice takes energy. You can see it being spent holding up the fake smiles.

What he said, and also the eyes. When people are being fake nice their eyes tend to give it away, or the things they say. People who are being fake nice also usually lay it on too thick.

I think it corresponds with actions, not expressions. If the seemingly niceness fades or drops suddenly, it is fake. If they continually come across as an upstanding person, then it is probably authentic niceness

watch what they do not what they say. Especially if they don't know you are.

You can tell by their smile and eyes, the face gives it away,

It can be difficult to tell, as long as you're doing the things they want from you. See what happens when you unexpectedly say no to something they want, for whatever reason. They may be able to continue being nice awhile if you do this, but probably won't stay that way long if they're fakes.

I hope for the best and laugh at the worst?

Looking at how people act in instant moments and high stress environments usually shows true character. Or seeing how the person is about something they don't like such as behavior in others, service people, self treatment etc. How they are on a bad day is a good insight too.

To the ppl who mentioned "fake smiles": pls keep in mind, a person may actually *want* to give a real smile, but just have difficulty with automatically generating the actual facial expression. Ergo, the fake smile can arise. There have been many times where I wanted to (genuinely) smile, to express my sincere happiness at a person and/or what they're saying, but my facial muscles for whatever reason, didn't want to cooperate, or I couldn't get a "real" smile up, in enough time, to be accurately reflected.

My point here is, not *all* "fake smiles", may actually be "fake", in the sense that they may still be generated out of true happiness, and pleasure, for another person.
