Ummm... perhaps the theatre (not the Regal 12 or anything like that, lol) to see perhaps a play, opera, etc. You don't show up there in holey ratty jeans... you'd be laughed out of the place.

I dunno, but as a woman, would that get under your skin on a Sat night, the boyfriend dressing like a slob?
Often times when people dress in a certain way that would seem inappropriate it's because they don't know how to dress appropriately. They have probably gone their whole life with never learning how. I had never had a suit until I was in my thirties. I have a worn exactly two times in my life. This is why there's a such thing as a haberdasher. Outside of work uniforms I don't own a pair of slacks.

I have a hard time wearing clothes that are meant to present you as formal because you can't do anything in these clothes it will destroy them and they are exceedingly expensive.

So if you find yourself with a partner that doesn't know how to dress up nice teach them how. One person I dated years ago thought the crap he wore to the golf course was dressing up nice. He has no frame of reference. Here in the US at least we are in an increasingly casual culture. The only place I think I know of where formality is mandatory are fancy restaurants and the courthouse.

Most beginning dates aren’t to see an opera tho….but Ok, if you are going on dates to the opera, you need to dress up. But I don’t think that was what the O.P. was asking…because if you’re going to something formal like an event or party, it’s common sense we want a man that can dress for the occasion ofc.

edit: That’s 2 extremes! Starched shirt & matchy match suit….or print tee & baseball hat. None of the above.

I've done 'first dates' at the Kennedy Center and the Warner Theatre in Washington and The Lyric in Baltimore... you dress up. Period.

You made it sound like no men wear suits on dates... apologies for the misunderstanding.

A small waist and curvy butt on a woman signal health and fertility. Science has shown this with studies of wast-to-hip ratio.

A beer gut on a man is the exact opposite.

That said, sometimes culture and fashion play a role in what is considered sexy and what is not. Up until the 90s, women asked "does this make my butt look big?" in fear of hearing "yes." Now they ask it in fear of hearing "no."

In some cultures, people see a man with a big belly as being wealthy and rich enough to be able to afford all of the food he eats to make him overweight, therefore he could be a good provider for a family. Yet in the USA it can mean he is actually the opposite, and somewhat low on the SES scale. Fast food and junk food are cheap, and low SES neighborhoods are often "food deserts" where there is little access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

I didn’t mean that…BUT there are ways for a man to be stylishly dressed up on a date without having to wear a matchy match suit or starched shirt.

Good point.

Well, it would be safe to wager that anyone with a gut and triple chin will not look good, whether sporting the Armani, ripped Levi's and holey T, or the B-Day suit.

Well said.

Though there is a (growing) contingent in the US that has become so used to the sight of very overweight men/people that a slim, fit guy is now considered unhealthy. In another thread recently, a poster called our current POTUS "scrawny." *This is not a political statement* but he's a healthy weight, not unhealthy.

Apparently, in the US, women are now expected to have the hard bodies and men to have the soft "curves."

Unrealistic expectations created by porn, onlyfans, tiktok, and Instagram models. Before this it was magazines. Nobody, especially older, should expect a woman to be a hard bodied goddess. It’s an unfair standard of beauty that people should really get over.

But also acknowledge that older guys, like women, go through hormonal changes that may give them a GUT whether they want it or not. It just happens and can’t be changed without an extreme lifestyle. Unless you’re just genetically blessed.
