I agree about bending rules, but not this rule. Bend a rule that won't effect the neighbors....allowing someone to pay the deposit in 2 payments is one thing, allowing an 18 yr old sex offender move in is another.
Agreed.

Like it or not, age 18 is a strong dividing line in our society. For many states and the federal govt, 18 is when you're considered an adult for: legal majority, signing contracts, voting, registering for the draft, buying cigarettes, buying lottery tickets, getting married without parental permission, joining the military without parental permission. Many states also have age 18 as a cut off for certain restrictions on sex, driving, casino gambling and many employment regulations.

Courts have upheld nighttime curfews on under 18, but not over. Think about the ramifications of that! It's not just governments; most banks and the credit bureaus also have 18 as their dividing line between adult and less-than-adult. It's a big line in the sand.

Woops. Sorry LOLWhat. I guess we were posting at the same time. Kind of derailed the thread for a minute there :-)

Of course, you all are right. 18 is adult. Used to drive me nuts during the Vietnam war that kids could be drafted but couldn't vote. Remember that? You had to be 21. Of course we protested. If you can be drafted you should at least have the right to vote on who sends you to war. Plus, we figured you should be able to drink, too.

Changing the drinking age to 18 was short-lived. Kind of like the 55 mph speed limit to supposedly save the gas reserves, too. But, again, I digress...

Yeah, and it drives me nuts that soldier can carry around loaded machine guns and drive $65 million tanks for years before they can have a beer.

Love the dog video, though.

I so agree. If you're an adult, you're an adult. You can be tried as an adult, but you can't have a beer? Be drafted, vote, but can't go to the bar? I still don't get how that got reversed. Maybe we need some more sit down strikes. They were quite effective

OK, to preface my next issue, if I had known that you have to list everyone's name and age of who is going to live there, or it had dawned on me, should I say, I would never have asked this question. I would not outright lie, though very tempting.

Because now, with telling the place I want that she is an adult, they now tell me they need to see her social security card. We don't have one. We can get one, but that will require waiting in line, and then waiting for it in the mail. That will take time out of my work day, and time to wait for the card, while meanwhile someone may snatch up the apartment I want. I'm very frustrated. I know it's all part of life, but it's freaking frustrating and I just wish for once something could be easy.

I'm assuming she has a SS number? You just don't have the card? That's weird to me, that they want to see the actual card. I've never required seeing a SS card. The govt subsidized senior place I just applied to required it, but I just figured that's because it's the govt.

I do require to see ID's, and note the address on the ID, as it will show up on the credit report as a previous address - just another check to make sure the person is who they say they are.

Sheesh, what a pain!

Could you ask them if you could show them last year's tax return that shows her listed as your daughter with the SS number? And then show her ID?

Or maybe you can just get some kind of official proof that she has an SS number from the SS office, while you wait for the actual card?

Or just try to apply somewhere else!

Yeah, that's weird. Can't you just show a copy of a birth certificate, or last year's tax return or something? I don't think I've ever had to show a social security card except for a new job.

If you're considering renting to someone you perceive as being on the low end of the age scale, probably best to do so. Any savvy underage teenager can enter a relevant SS# not their own on the application - and would you check that number? Most wouldn't.

I haven't either but then I'm rather ancient!

Tax return idea was indeed intriguing. Alas, apartment said nope. However, I was able to make it to the social security office this morning and get that receipt thing that says she applied, and the apartment said they will take that. We are applying this afternoon. Cross your fingers for me, that we get it. I know some places will either say 1) no bankruptcy period 2) no un-discharged bankruptcy 3) no bankruptcy if it has not been two years. I asked the girl the other day about bankruptcies and she didn't seem too alarmed, she just said I might have to pay a slightly higher deposit.
