How can one tell if something IS one's midlife crisis if one doesn't know what one's midlife is???? If I knew my death date, then I could tell you -but as it is now, I've had so many sorts of crisis it is impossible to say.

I went back to school and got my master's in library science, which enabled me to at last work in my dream field.
I previously had worked in the corporate world as a sys admin, and then taught public school. Neither one suited me. Becoming a reference librarian had been a lifelong dream. I woke up on my 50th birthday, thought "it's now or never", and submitted my admission application that very week. Loved (almost) every minute of grad school and (almost) every minute I worked as a librarian.
I went back to school and got my master's in library science, which enabled me to at last work in my dream field.

How uplifting to read a success story such as yours. Congrats! One thing I gather from reading City-Data over a period of years is the surprisingly large number of people who hate their jobs. That is sad; more people should have the gumption to do what you did.

Sorry to disappoint you, but not everyone has one. I didn't.
I didn't either. What I mean is, although I have had a few crises in my life, they were not existential ones - they were external crises not connected to any particular age. They could have come at any age.
To put it a different way, I believe most of us have had some pretty hard knocks in life at various stages, but that's not what is normally meant by "mid-life crisis".
When I was around 38 years old I came to the realization that I would never have sex again.
Took me a while to get over that.
Now, at 62, I'm over it.
