I, for one, enjoy them! For me, it is the equivalent of Internet small talk, and it gives me the opportunity to "know" the regular posters better -- and sometimes, like the how many jobs? thread, it gave me the chance to look back, take stock, and be amazed at how many jobs I have actually had!
I just scroll past things I have no interest in answering or reading but I would never hurt anyone's feelings pointing out how silly or useless I think threads are. When I saw all the questions I just figured the person wanted to contribute to this group or maybe he or she is housebound, filling a little time or lonely. I answered a few of the questions because I try not to sweat the small stuff, there are much bigger things in life to worry about.

I found the answers people gave interesting on some of the questions.

I think sometimes it just about contributing. And I think it could make others feel bad if nobody responded to their thread, so I think replying can be considered a kindness. I know for a fact I don't post anything for attention. Yes, some seniors could be bored, they could be unable to get out, they may not have family or friends, we never know what others are dealing with.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand what 42 means?
It took Deep Thought, the most complex computer in the universe, to come up with the answer to "life, the universe, and everything." By the time Deep Thought found the answer (42), everyone had forgotten the question. Further exploration revealed the question was, "What is six times nine?" They had the right answer, but they got the question wrong.
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe were humorous books by Douglas Adams, who was also show runner for Dr. Who for a while. BBC did a radio serial of it, and there was also a movie. It's still popular today, because it is really funny.
I assume it's someone who wants to participate in posting new threads, but doesn't have anything particular to say/ask, so they go with "how many..." questions. They're probably old/retired, looking back on their own life, contemplating their stats so to speak (by stats, I mean how many jobs, how many houses, how many jobs they've had over the years, etc.), so they think it's interesting to ask others about their stats as well.
Just pass them by if they bother you. Your post complaining about them doesn't add to the forum any more than their "how many" posts do, to be honest.
