Although this thread is 6 years old, yet it is once again revived. Rhode Islanders ARE good "revellers" so I'm confused why Rosco doesn't like strawberry ice cream.
Now that the "blood letting" is over, I think it's safe to tell you know why I don't like strawberry ice cream. It hurts to talk about this...
I like strawberry's and I really like ice cream, it's those little seeds that sometimes pop up when you least expect it. Now...I have been shunned for my views... and have I experienced slurs for my opinion. I am no longer welcome at most Dairy Queens. But I will continue to stickup for my rights and my opinions. I will not be discriminated upon.

I get you. Strawberry ice cream just... isn't that good.
Though I have been known to put strawberries in my vanilla ice cream. Does this make me a flip flopper?
I am a single African-American woman and I have two children. I have been considering moving to RI, you folks seem to know a lot about the state. I have been warned to avoid Rhode Island and Boston due to my race. Should I be concerned that my children and I won't find community and friendships because of our race?
No that's ridiculous -Providence is diverse and happy about it. Boston is more difficult to connect w people and find community no matter what color you are.

The short answer is no. Or at the very least, that is the last thing you should be worried about. The big question is whether you will be able to provide for yourself and your children. The economy is in the toilet here, and not likely to get better anytime soon. Don't come here without a good job lined up.
As for the race thing, well those who "warned you" have probably never been here or at least lived here for any period of time. Only listen to folks who have actually experienced it.

I've lived in both places, and really didn't find that to be true about Boston. Honestly, I generally find Bostonians to be more outgoing and likely to talk to "strangers",
I would seriously re-consider your options...New York is a large state and I'm sure you could find anything in NY that would be ten times better than anything in Rhode Island...But then again this is coming from a 16 year old.
1.) The people in Rhode Island are rude and quite obnoxious for that matter...I'm from Los Angeles, CA and never in my life have I come across a more rude bunch in my life...You even look at someone here, and it's like, "What are you looking at?!" But there are the nice people here, it's not all bad...Just not my cup of tea/coffee...Generally anybody here has lived here most of their lives, so they can't imagine being any place else, but yes there are a small amount of people that do enjoy living here that have moved here from out of state.
2.) The cost of living in Rhode Island is outrageous. You looking anywhere from $1,000 and up for a one bedroom apartment, unless you live in a crime manifested area, then you will find cheaper rent. Vehicle Tax in Rhode Island is outrageous too! So if you have a new car, be prepared to spend a pretty penny. (Thank god I brought my 18 Year Old Jeep with me.)
3.) The school system here is actually not that bad. It's actually probably one of the best I have been to since my family left California.
Rhode Island is a beautiful state with lots of beautiful things to see, but if your looking to save money then this is definitely not the place to be. The unemployment rate in Rhode Island is now #1 on the charts...I know someone that searched for a job for three years in this state before getting hired and she had 30 Years of experience.
