Surprised that no one here mentioned Del Mar Pizza. I grew up in Philly/NYC and this is the best East Coast style pizza I've had on the West Coast. Even better than I remember eating on the East Coast. It was ranked #9 of the Trendy 20 from SD Magazine.

Agree with the comments here about Pizza Port. The pizza is just not good (though the newer thin crust option is an improvement). I find myself there regularly because they make and serve some of the best beer in the country. If they made pizza equally as good as their beer, they'd rule the world!

Spiritos in Carlsbad in the Vons on the El Camino Real for a NY style thin crust pizza. Mike is the owner and East Coast transplant originally from Elizabeth, NJ and he is a very freindly guy. We used to patronize this place before it appeared on DDD with Guy Fiery. But the funny thing happen - it went completely crazy after the visit both in service and the quality of food. Still it will be our place for a pizza pie to eat or to take out.

We've eaten in many good SD pizza places, including Pizzeria Luigi's (especially in Golden Hill), Bronx Pizza and Project Pie in Hillcrest, and Gus's Subs and Pizza in Point Loma.

But when you bite into a pizza at Venice Pizza House...it's a whole different experience! The cheese is very thick, the sauce is awesome, and the dough is very good. Try their Garlic Cheese Bread - which comes with a small container of their pizza sauce...OMG it's tasty!

FYI...I'm not related or friends with anyone at Venice, so you can trust my comments.

I've heard a lot of buzz about Pizzeria Mozza so I'll have to check it out next time I'm downtown.

We just went this past weekend and it was very good but not some place we are dying to go back. It made for a nice afternoon in a Sunday after a 3 mile stroll from Spanish Landing

These are not pizzas you order by the slice or by pie size. Nor is it a "insert city style of pizza here" restaurant. Its definitely more authentic Neopolitan style and they do very well at it.

Pizzas that have combinations of fresh tomatoes, anchovies, buffalo mozz, very thin crust and perfectly flaky. Perfecto!

Typically I don't even think twice about the bill, but I was a little surprised and did a double take.

2 pizzas, 2 iced teas, 1 insalata shared = $72 total ($60 bill +$12 tip)

It seems perfect for the location and I think will do very well with the convention or visitor crowd.
