The people who don't experience that unravelling are those afforementioned types. Spend a year there and you WILL see this.

A great example is the fact that it is a popular spot for 22 year-olds who either just graduated or just dropped out of college. The ones who grow up and follow a career - especially creative careers - will leave after they've enjoyed their time there. The ones who never grow up will stay... forever. They become 40 year-old Bros.

The bottom line is, if you don't fit in the archetype listed above, you have to find a network of like-minded transplants who are themselves sticking around in SD or else the place will begin to feel strangely dead.
Certainly not true for everyone, but for a lot of people it is true.

Actually, it is true for me and I have regrets about it but there is a lot more to the story.

I was referring to the neighborhoods in which I resided in my 7 years there - Northpark, Mission Valley, PB, OB, and Kearney Mesa, in addition to the area in which I worked - University City/La Jolla.

I hate impugning a place with such great weather and so much to do but yes, the people there - the weakest part of the experience - can be lumped together. Yes, every city has representative amounts of all parts of American culture. San Diego has its enclaves of introverted, pale nerds (who take over the city two weeks a year). San Diego has people who don't like to surf, people who don't like the beach, people who don't still like crappy rap-rock, whatever. That's not the point. We're describing cities on this forum, and generalization is inevitable. If you have, say, a 85% chance of experiencing what I experienced, that's suitable for a testimony. Yes, there's the obligatory quiet cul-de-sac Asian suburb where nothing happens until everyone piles into their vans each Sunday for church. Is that worth noting in each testimony? That's in every big city in America. Note also that what I said about the place was very conditional.

Where are you residing now, milady? Are you finding there more to your liking, or is your dissatisfaction internal in part?

1. Not being interesting in being as tan as possible.
2. Being literate.
3. Not thinking 'chill' is a useful quality
4. Not being faux-spiritual/religious
5. Not wanting to spend $20 cover for a DJ who sucks.

milady, you remind me of another (same) oddly named poster, ms. naomi manischewitz

my brain doesn't work those double negatives well, but i like it here despite being paler, literate, seeing benefits to chilling, not being faux, and not a clubber with good or bad dj's. i know you are just joking, gaga, right?

I take it that you were not able to make any friends while you were here, otherwise you would have some fond memories. What a waste of your life it must have been, seven years down the drain and not a pleasant thing to say. How someone can spend seven long years of their life in such a miserable place is beyond belief. Well, I'm sure things are going swimmingly for you now.
