Imperial Beach's proximity to the Mexican border has always been an issue with revitalization.

It has Stardust Donuts, which makes up for any shortcomings.

For some reason, I've always found IB oddly interesting. I don't get down there much, but when I am, I find the mix of grittiness and new-ness an odd visual.

Magnifico's story must have taken place in the mid-90's because skinheads have been long gone in IB for some time.
7thr street still has skinheads, but they pretty chillin they drink, and jam out most of the time.

There is nothing wrong with IB. It's actually a pretty decent area. The town probably has the cheapest coastal property in So Cal (and I' am talking about good-looking properties, not ghettos).
Sure, it's not a majority white, expensive, ritzy, snooty beach town like Coronado or Del Mar, but then again, who the heck want's it to become that? I sure don't. Also, IB is an older town; I think it's one of the original So Cal beach towns. There is this laid-back 1950's-60's feel in IB that's pretty cool. Good Mexican food as well.

Yeah IB is chill, one of the last real beach towns left in San Diego that has character. It hasn't been torn down and developed for the rich yet, ( I hope this does not happen). San Diego already has enough nice ritzy beach towns as it is, IB is a little dirty, but seriously, most of the South Bay is old/urban so of course it's not gonna be as nice as the newer Northen Coastal communities that is more suburban.

"Pretty" is subjective. To me, it's equally pretty with PB or La Jolla.
I would guess, its reputation of being 'dirtier' is due to its proximity to the exit of the Tijuana River. Sanitation isn't as strict in Mexico, so Imperial Beach is more often declared unsafe for swimming. That does happen sometimes in PB. Probably in La Jolla too, though I don't remember it specifically.
But it's not rare to happen at Imperial Beach.
