I didn't read all of the posts, however, I would suggest that you consider renting in Berkeley across the bay.

It is MUCH sunnier and warmer every afternoon when the fog burns off and there is a very walkable, quirky downtown area that is quite fun. It is not a big city, so if that is your main complaint, this will not help you but it is urban and also urbane with all of the people who are associated with Cal.

If you want more sunshine and better weather, just take a foggy San Francisco afternoon and hop on the BART to Berkeley. Walk through the campus area, check out Shattuck, Bancroft and College. You might find that it is more what you are looking for as a young, disillusioned, chilly Tech. The rents are usually cheaper, too.

Please DON'T encourage the OP to move to Berkeley. Thanks.

Who are these cool police from whom we should derive our outlook?

BTW, music from the '60's blows all the current corporate pop crap out of the water.

Being cool is over rated!

I think the OP is one of those people the will be miserable no matter where he goes. While SF may not be the best city in the world (or US) they is still tons of stuff to do and see there. If you can't find something entertaining there you just have the wrong attitude.

It's not like you are in Podunk Idaho or something (no offense to Idaho) where there is a limited amount of stuff.

What ??? umm, the tech boom was in the 90s, but then again you probably didn't hear about it in Michigan.

I think right now, "Cali" is as "cool" as it has ever been with all the organic vegan food - local produce - pinot noir - Facebook/Google/Apple - market street tech - high rent thing going on.
