Some people can be persuaded to spend their life paying off their expensive coffins haha... cause the brainwash is to buy, buy yourself a nice coffin...to be proud your coffin is better than the Johnses'... The elite/the puppetmasters know how to herd the sheep into the dream coffin buying spree...paying them just enough so that they don't go under water....be grateful that your Masters allow you to live in the rate race trap, in the little boxes, and not starve to death....and the cubicles are getting smaller...their walls are getting lower...There's NO logical explanation for anyone being in "Bay area" other than to "cut some wood" ($$) and run for the hills!

You say that you've lived in 4 countries and 10 or so states and you're only in your 30's?? I'm curious how much all of those moves cost you. My family moved abroad once and it was over 10k to get our stuff shipped over- and that was 8yrs ago. Could this be a part of the reason you've found your finances rough?

I'm also a tad curious as to which countries you've even been able to move to, since most of Europe, for example, is incredibly difficult to move to if you're not an EU citizen, married to one, or sponsored by a company that is looking for a highly specialized person.

Some of us are here because our family is here... and yes, there are actually those that own their homes...

About 40% of home sales are for CASH...

I'm not a fan of SF other than it does make a beautiful backdrop for sunsets as I look West from my vantage point in Oakland.

Interesting that I stumbled upon this thread as a result of reading this: https://www.reddit.com/r/news/commen..._landlord_who/, and as someone who was born and raised in suburban Buffalo (mentioned a few posts up), yes I do agree it's an up-and-coming city, and does have plenty of culture, including an underrated and under-invested waterfront and two professional sports teams. Our biggest problem is that we lost a ton of manufacturing companies and are just now shifting to "service" and R&D fields, and we have developers that don't want to invest in the urban prairie.

"if people are obviously trolling then I'll delete your posts and do my best to ban you"- Maybe you are the one that is trolling.

We've been through over a year of financial counseling, with over 50 hours of workshops and counseling, also have a FA. We don't spend money on fancy things, we also use old technology. We haven't owned a TV in 12 years and don't have cable.

That's great that you have more savings maybe you should be sharing your success tips instead of telling others what they should be doing

The only reason we have cars is b/c we have a split commute off public transit lines. And they are POS's approx. 15 years old.

During the economic down turn I lost my job and was out of a job for over a year which drained a huge part of our savings. I took the first job I could find which was a massive pay cut, and have been struggling bouncing back ever since. I can only put away about 150/month including IRA savings. So I guarantee you probably do have more in savings and do make more than me.

I'd love to know when you started renting out here b/c that can make all the difference in someone's success in this city. I have friends that moved here years ago and easily pay 7K-10K less than us/year in rent.... that is a retirement account or a much more comfortable life and social scene.

Don't even get me started on clothes I never buy new only buy on half off half off sales if its more than 30 bucks I don't buy it and we don't have enough money or space to purchase much. I wear the same pair of jeans every day and only own 1 pair, I actually just got mine patched for holes b/c its cheaper than buying a new pair.
Ok, I guess you should clarify, less than 7K before or after taxes?

I started living out here 3-4 yrs ago, so maybe my rent is slightly less (but still not rent controlled). When I had a more stable job, I was putting away 1K a month in savings after healthcare and retirement. I'm currently contracting, so I've definitely taken a hit recently, but I still try to save more than $150/month. We basically make do on my husband's salary while I try to save mine. So I don't know what to tell you.

If you just moved here and you're not in tech, I would have told you you shouldn't have moved here.

Pardon my ignorance on this subject, and perhaps I should just start a new thread, but I'm very curious as to who are the "techies" and others who are buying these properties?

I don't entirely understand why they are perceived as such outsiders? Are most of them educated in the United States and U.S. citizens, or is the job market in San Francisco, and these tech firms particularly, international? I would love to think many of the 'new' higher paying tech jobs were simply replacing other lower paying jobs, but this doesn't appear to the case at all.

I was lucky: in the late 90s my company (Netscape) got bought out by AOL.

Suddenly all this worthless stock I had tripled in value. So I sold it and made a down payment on a home in Fremont.

SF is an even harder nut to crack.

Something similar happened to me, except that I was even luckier: The stock was enough to entirely pay off my mortgage!

My god-sister did the same...

She got a part time high school summer job in 1979 at a company called Apple.

After high school, she went full time... her dad told her to load up on company stock.

Later she was able to pay cash for her South Bay home... and become a stay at home mom...

Her story is not all that unusual for the Bay Area at the time...

Thats a dream most of us in tech have.

I feel I am paid partly by my company, and partly by the stock market, and somewhat by Janet Yellen , the latter two are the only reason I was able to buy a house when I did.
