Summer Heat of 1980 (Dallas, Longview, West: elementary school, camp, live)

I remember that summer very well. At that time, I was still in junior high, but there was still plenty to do outside. It was a good thing there was a swimming pool in my parents' backyard. We had that and the water hose. Fun, but very hot. We wondered if it would ever get cool again.

Also don't forget the 1978-79 ice storm and power black out. In the 1983 Christmas freeze I had a picture taken of myself walking on White Rock Lake.

The ice event I remember happened in 1977. Like 3 or 4 inches thick on the streets, and stayed in place for three days.

The one over new year's 78 turning into 79 was really weird because limbs kept falling on power lines for 2-3 nights in a row and the low clouds would flash with an unearthly greenish/white/blue...

One of my coworkers said he was going to visit Lake Whitney this weekend. I mentioned Satan's Storm and he never heard of it. He Googled it and found a couple links, probably the same ones you mentioned. We can only imagine what people were wondering when they were rudely awakened by extreme heat.

My wife and I were living in Grand Prairie and she was pregnant with our first daughter. I worked nights at the Naval Air Station so my days were under a fan in our apartment with our sometimes working air conditioning.
My wife had the worst of it, she didn't give birth until December.

So, Yea we remember.

Funny how people who were around then do remember that summer that stands out due to the severe heat.

I started a new career that summer that put me outdoors most of the day.

Since AC units wererumming 24 hours a day you would go outside and hear the whole neighborhood humming from the units.

About the best you could do back then is cool your house down about 20 degrees so the day time the house temperature would only get down to maybe 90 degrees inside.

We really did put a sprinkler on the roof to try & bring the inside temp down to a tolerable level. Can't recall if it really worked.
