That's why we were recently looking for travel insurance for a trip to Japan, and why I was looking for experience with claims.
Japan typically requires EVERYONE to pay before they leave the hospital. I had a friend who had to use the dial a friend methodology to get bailed out after a week or so stay. Luckily her copay was $200 out of $2K, but at that time the hospital was cash only and she didn’t expect to be hospitalized for a week... so she wasn’t exactly prepared. When I was there, it wasn’t to the point where there were 24-hour ATMs either, so the whole situation was pretty awesome for all involved. I don’t know how much the cost is for uninsured folks though. My friend had national health insurance.

SO do many Philippines hospitals. You stay until you pay.
Planned for a RCCL Mediterranean cruise that departs in early May.
Wait for RCCL to announce cancellation so that I can get full refund. Given that State Department has issued Level 4 travel warning to Italy, I bet RCCL will not take the risk to make calls at Italian ports.
Otherwise RCCL is obliged to offer me full refund within 15 days of departure. One member of our group is from an infected area which RCCL bans from boarding if she is there 15 days before departure (ironically Italy is one of the infected areas). Called RCCL yesterday and they confirmed if the ban is still valid at that time, they will give full refund to all guests within the group.
I bet RCCL will soon announce cancellation of all Mediterranean cruises this summer. Its share price dropped 16% today. Tough time for cruise industry.
I cancelled my international flight plans for next month and Delta issued me a full refund. They're already going nuts in Europe, Asia and the Middle East so it's just not worth taking the chance of having a vacation that's filled with aggravation. People seem to have short memories to when we had the 2009/2010 Pandemic scare and they're acting worse now.
I had plans to go visit my sister up north next week, but it was purely an elective, fun trip, and I decided not to go. While I'm not especially worried about contracting Covid-19 myself, I don't want to be the one who spreads airplane-acquired viruses to other people.
My flight reservations were on Southwest, my favorite airline, in part because they never charge a fee to change reservations. I just have to use the credit within one year.
Trip to Bali scheduled for end of month via Taipei from SFO. Both Taipei and Bali don't have advisories beyond Level 1 but wondering if we should just reschedule to June. I imagine planes and airports will be empty. I have March 28 - April 4 off - and we are looking to go somewhere if even a driving trip.
I also just canceled a business trip for later this month (US). I'd be meeting a lot of folks for for the first time so lots of handshakes, four total flights in/out, plus my guess is my firm will start asking and/or requiring folks to work from home so it would be somewhat of a wasted trip. I am flying Delta, anyone know what their policy is now?
