A large majority of these aren't organized gangs like we're use to thinking. They're just groups of people in a neighborhood, teenagers, who form a meaningless clique or "gang" as they have nothing else to do, and then attack other "gangs" to protect their "integrity" or their "turf".
They're misguided youth with no direction. There a aren't 150,000 straight up drug lord gang bangers.
Definitely not 500 gangs , more or less around 40-45. Yes and no in the regards to organized. These cliques are the results of internal conflicts, shifting of residents from the demolished high rise, and mixing of different decks. There are already groups establish just new nicknames or teens being ruthless & reckless. Also, Retribution (Revenge) & Clout is the main cause of the killings between cliques.
Freddy K,Early 2000s Los Angeles was murder capital & Compton was also murder Capital in 2006 when they disbanded the police force & brought in the sherriffs.
Ill say from about 2009-14 things have been on a decline until that 100 day 100 night gang war in South Central last year. But like all cities crime goes up & down but in Los Angeles & Chicago it's based on how many gangs are at war because they're both gang infested cities.
Well people on social media made it bigger than what it was but it was a real thing with the 100s gang & a few other gangs in that area at war. That's why i said Los Angeles is unique because any given year it can have in uproar in violence in the city & county depending on how many gangs are feuding at the moment.
Los Angeles County & Southern California at its core still has the most gangs & gang members in the country. The Chicago violence seems to have spiraled out of control when the public housing units we're tore down & rival gangs got displaced in the wrong neighborhoods.
Why is the SD metro so safe? I don't get it? What's different about it vs other cities with large violent crime rates. It's almost as if it's missing something....

You and your false info dude.
By sheer numbers, LA only had the most homicides in 2002.
And Compton was not murder cap in 06. Compton had 39 murders in 06 for a murder rate of 40/100k. 05 was when it was 67/100k but that was only one year and can't compare to the 21st century peaks of Gary and Camden.
1 in every 3 years since 2001 Gary is over 60/100k and 2 of those years was over 70/100k. 1 of them was 79.4/100k.
And 1 every 3 years in Camden since 2001 has been over 60/100k. 2 of them over 70/100k and 1 which was 2013 was 86.3/100k.
