Shariff,Same bumps took place in Los Angeles in the 90s.
600 plus homicides weren't seen for Chicago or Los Angeles since the early 2000s,But the difference in today is Los Angeles gangs have a farther reach abroad as to where you see Los Angeles gang culture influence Red vs Blue wars in cities like St Louis, Little Rock,Brooklyn,Memphis, & even far away as murderous countries like El Salvador & Honduras .
Los Angeles gangs ( Ms 13 - 18 sur ) are the reason El Salvador is Murder Capital of the world right now.
Same can be said about Chicago gangs with their broad reach Memphis ( VL & GD the largest), Jackson, Little Rock, Milwaukee, Spain & Italy (LKN).
The 500 "gangs" includes every kid who declares he's in a gang or the police are watching (this is all an estimate to get to a full 150,000) that they are basically in some group with criminal intents.
Of the actual 40-45 documented legit gangs all studies have shown there are between 65,000 and 75,000 or so members.
The big jump up to 150,000 assumes all these very loose knit groups of neighborhood kids in the ghetto who case after each other. That's the vague estimate of a number, since there are no hard facts.
Misinformation about the "500" gangs in which the police was speaking on "factions" in total of the 40-45 gangs. The 150K is the Metro estimates including the suburbs membership too.
Why is the SD metro so safe? I don't get it? What's different about it vs other cities with large violent crime rates. It's almost as if it's missing something....
The San Diego area/county is missing poor and uneducated low-life thugs. Pretty much the entire county is like an upscale community with no ghettos.
My point is that every city isn't dangerous as the 80s & 90s,The Chicago high rises getting tore down does play a part in Chicago mob wars today.Of course the projects were worse in the 90s as I've stated every city was dangerous in those days & the 80s was America's most violent decade ever by murder rate.
Chicago gangs seem to have a broad reach in other places around the Midwest & South but the California gangs are far more known on a worldwide scale and more spread out due to the drug connection in the Westcoast region.Though I do give the edge to Chicago in the mafia world.

I understand that my point was mainly aim at the estimates, I know crime was worser through 70-90s. I want to add media influence for extending the influence of Cali black gangs internationally as well. Not trying to pick an argument.
Media did play a part but overall Crack cocaine was a big reason because it first hit Miami & Los Angeles on a large scale.Difference is the Los Angeles gangs setup shop in many cities across the country & imported the gang culture where they had influence or family members.

Also because of Hollywood/Music Industry, which helped put the Crips and Bloods on the map nationally and globally. Ask anybody on the East Coast who never went to LA or visited but never went to the hood and asked them about LA prior to movies like Colors, Boyz N The Hood & Menance II Society and rap stars like NWA, Snoop, Ice-T, etc... and they would tell you its all blonds, beaches and nice weather.
