Kobe25,

No the murders actually went down then occasionally bump up. In the 90s, Chi homicides stayed above 600+, starting into the early 00s it finally drop below 600 then eventually swing between 300-480. Wish it just continue to lower but the shorties too deep in the revenge cycle.

Joey,

Black gangs didnt emulate drive-bys just pick up the tactics like any other crime group. After the Irish; the Jews , Italians, & English did it too. As far as name references it's true and yet to individuals & groups. Half the Chi mobs are based on their own concepts while L.A gangs tend to based on geography.

Shariff,Same bumps took place in Los Angeles in the 90s.

600 plus homicides weren't seen for Chicago or Los Angeles since the early 2000s,But the difference in today is Los Angeles gangs have a farther reach abroad as to where you see Los Angeles gang culture influence Red vs Blue wars in cities like St Louis, Little Rock,Brooklyn,Memphis, & even far away as murderous countries like El Salvador & Honduras .

Los Angeles gangs ( Ms 13 - 18 sur ) are the reason El Salvador is Murder Capital of the world right now.

2/1:

Greater Richmond ended January with 7 murders; 5 coming in the City of Richmond...

Hampton Roads ended January with 19 murders. The Seven Cities recorded as follows--->Chesapeake 6, Newport News 5, Norfolk 4, Hampton 2, Virginia Beach 1...

Portsmouth and Suffolk still without a homicide. Chesapeake's numbers are misleading, as 5 of its 6 homicides came in a murder-suicide, and the other murder was the body of a Portsmouth man who had been missing since December. The most violent areas of the Tidewater remain Southeast Newport News and multiple neighborhoods between Portsmouth and Norfolk...

Jacksonville Florida is up to 15 as of Feb. 1st. Ironically enough there is a homicide map showing where they happened and literally every single one of them is in the dark part of town. A black baby just short of 2 years old got shot and killed this weekend riding in the back seat of his parents car. Both parents were shot as well but will be ok. Equally as disturbing, 2 days prior to this another 6 month old black child was in the backseat of a different car when both of his parents were shot and killed while sitting on a side street. Thankfully the kid was fine in this one.

Where is the outrage????

Shariff every city in America isn't bad as before including Chicago, but the high rises getting tore down was one of the reasons homicides went up in Chicago in the 2000s.
No, it's the opposite. In the heyday of the projects back in the mid 1990's there were around 850 to 950 murders a year.

Around the year 2000 when they really started coming down they averaged 600 to 700.

The past 10 years have been mostly right around 450.

Last year was 488. That's actually still 23% lower than any other year from 1968 through 2003.

Murders went up last year by 10% and have gone down at a slower pace then NYC or Los Angeles, but if you look at it alone, Chicago has still gone down by around 50% from its peak.

There are already groups establish just new nicknames or teens being ruthless & reckless. Also, Retribution (Revenge) & Clout is the main cause of the killings between cliques.
The 500 "gangs" includes every kid who declares he's in a gang or the police are watching (this is all an estimate to get to a full 150,000) that they are basically in some group with criminal intents.

Of the actual 40-45 documented legit gangs all studies have shown there are between 65,000 and 75,000 or so members.

The big jump up to 150,000 assumes all these very loose knit groups of neighborhood kids in the ghetto who case after each other. That's the vague estimate of a number, since there are no hard facts.

Chicago ended with 51 murders, the most since 2000.

Just to point out for comparison sake, that "heyjackass" site is run with the bias of hiking up the murder number as high as possible (although this year that isn't hard).

It's not really to be used for comparison of intentional homicides. It includes things like self defense, unintentional manslaughter, justified police shootings and justified killings.

For instance it includes things like the police killing someone coming after them and shooting with a gun (as happened Saturday), domestic related homicides such as a woman with a valid gun permit killing an abusive boyfriend who broke into her home and attacked her (happened) and then a clerk shooting two armed teenagers who were robbing his store at gunpoint (happened earlier this month).

They're deaths, and happen everywhere in some degree, but if you're comparing intentional homicide rates as the FBI and police officially report and are audited - you don't include all those.

heyjackass reported 503 deaths last year, but 488 of those were actual murders/homicides that would warrent an arrest.
