I've always wondered how accurate this is. I doubt there are 150,000 active gangbangers in Chicago. That's 1 in 20 people total in the city regardless of their age. If you narrowed it down to 15-30 year olds which is how old most gangbangers are, it would be a stat that's a little too high to be believable imo.

If there are say 500 active gangs, to get even 100,000 gang members each gang would need 200 members. 200 members in a few blocks doesn't sound right to me. Same with the number of gangs in Chicago. I find it hard to believe there are over 500 active gangs but I really don't know anything. It just sounds off to me.

Some into money only, Some into beefing with other crews, Some into organized crime, Some are active.

A large majority of these aren't organized gangs like we're use to thinking. They're just groups of people in a neighborhood, teenagers, who form a meaningless clique or "gang" as they have nothing else to do, and then attack other "gangs" to protect their "integrity" or their "turf".

They're misguided youth with no direction. There a aren't 150,000 straight up drug lord gang bangers.

Chicago Gang Violence: By The Numbers - ABC News
The media is pretty stupid.

For example it says "Chicago has the highest number of homicides among cities with populations of more than 1 million." Um, it obviously has the highest number of homicides period.

It also compares the murder rate to NYC and LA, and then goes on to say "but Chicago's population is 3 times smaller than NYC and nearly twice as small as LA" as if it means something when discussing the murder rate.

I thought that figure is for all of Chicagoland, not the city itself. 150k to about 1.1 million people on the south/west sides, that's 1 in 10 people in general being an active gang member. Take into account women, children, and the elderly. Damn.

Clean up the gang situation and Chicago turns into an LA.

It be the metro, because the same commission said that there was 70,000 in the city a few years ago.

Clean up Chicago & it turns into L.A ? Los Angeles still has a very bad gang problem itself & that's not even factoring in surrounding cities like Compton,Inglewood, Long beach ,818 Valley area & East L.A barrios. Its just unfortunately Chicago has more Black hoods than Los Angeles at this moment.

LA is still one of the safest cities in the country. That's just a fact. It's been that way for most of the 2000s.

LA county included.
