The short list of characters that would absolutely need to be on GA for me to EVER consider watching it after this season.
Derek
Meredith
Cristina
Those are nonnegotiable. Also I'd like to have all the original Season 1 characters that are presently on the show plus Lexxie. But without those 3 above, they may as well end the show. It would NOT be Grey's Anatomy any more.

I guess you won't be watching next season...if there is one. Mer and Cristina are moving on. Lexxie will have to the Grey in GA.
The actors who play Meredith, Derek, Christina, and Bailey have all signed 2-year contract extensions as of yesterday (according to TVGuide.com and various other outlets), so no worries about them.
My guess is that Arizona is history. Derek is probably seriously injured (which will keep him and Meredith in Seattle). Christina will stay to help Meredith. Karev will stay because he'll be so guilt-ridden that he was supposed to be on the plane and Arizona died instead. Lexie will be seriously hurt (and probably never able to have kids of her own, which will make her appreciate Mark's baby).
I'm assuming that Jessica Capshaw (Arizona) didn't want to stay because baby 3 is on the way, so they had to find a good way of writing her out. With her death, all the little docs who would have flown the nest have a reason to stay put.
Of course, something "very sad" is also supposed to be happening in addition to the "major death." I figure that either has to do with Kepner or Adele. Although, honestly, Kepner is better suited to administration anyway, so not passing the boards is not really such a bad thing for her. Surely she could transition into some kind of administrative job, at least for the time being, and that might really suit her skills and personality better than surgery ever did. Then she could retake the boards if she wanted to in a year and move on from there. She's having a tough time right now, but she's pretty spunky. I think she can pull through her freak-out (jeez, if you can't find the joy in life while sleeping with JACKSON AVERY then you're really just too pathetic to live anyway).
I'm shocked there's another season for this now. I thought this was going to be the last season, until I saw thursdays episode and thought they'd have to be evil people to end the show with a plane crash.
I gotta say, I agree though... if Meredith, Derek, and Christina aren't at least in the next season, i wouldn't even bother watching it anymore. But with the news they signed new contracts, it sounds promising that they will be. Although we can possibly also expect one of them could be like a "ghost" for a few episodes or something too. I think Kepner will be leaving. I don't know why they've been writing her character as a major failure, but it's got to be for the expectations that she's definitely leaving the show.

That is the absolute truth! What a dingbat she is.

They are all dingbats. I know hundreds of doctors and not a single one of them is a basket case like every character on that show.
