Back to Theon, he's probably one of the most unsympathetic characters created in the story. I dislike weak cowardly characters and Theon is the weakest cowardly one in the show. I will be perfectly happy if they kill him in the next episode to provide more airtime for other characters like Dany, or Jamie, or heck .. even that crazy sister of Kat's.

No. Theon was a "hostage" child of Winterfall. He was delivered as a young boy to the Starks to keep the Iron king (Theon' father) in check. He grew up with the Stark children. (I think I have this right. Please correct anything I don't. It's been awhile since I read the books).
Yes you are right. Basically Theon is a ward. This happens a lot in the book and probably happened a lot in real life too yet I can think of no examples. Sons and daughters of important men being raised by other important men to keep kingdoms and alliance in check. If you break your alliance with me or dont do what i say, I have one of your sons or daughters.
You can use Sansa as an example. She is basically a prisoner of the lannisters, yet treated as royalty still.
