It's one of those shows which is considered to be one of the best shows on TV, and my friend who loves it tells me to watch it as well. So I watched the pilot and found it be incredibly underwhelming surprisingly.

It's hardly even original for a police show, as it relies on these big cliches, such as the main cop sticking his nose where it doesn't belong, and his captain get's overly dramatic about it, and chews him out for after; like this kind of thing hasn't been exhausted so many times before.

So I don't get what's so special about this show special as it really seems like average stuff we have seen so much before, unless I am wrong?

Beats me.

Like you I could not get past the first episode. Very slow and nothing special. I am sure it gets better. But I have tried three times now and can't muster any desire to get past the pilot. Every few years I try again because it's so forgettable I can't recall what happened. Maybe I should skip ahead to episode 5 and start there.

A friend of mine couldn't get past the 1st episode either. She just wasn't interested in the subject matter, and she said she couldn't understand what the characters were saying.

I loved The Wire (but not season 2).

It came out 16 years ago. I would imagine that has a lot to do with why I don't get it. I probably would have liked it when it aired. I mean, people just rave about it. It was about 2 years ago it was remastered into HD, and I gave it another try, but still a no for me. I cannot get interested in any of the characters or the plot. I say this and then I will probably try again, LOL, if it's on Prime. I am in a 'nothing is on' place.

Remastered in HD? I thought it was shot in 480p, so is remastering it to 1080p going to actually look good? Someone told me that I have to wait for season 3 for the show to get really good, but why would the writers wait that long before it gets good really.

According to IMDb it was shot with 35mm film. 35mm could easily be remastered to 1080p or even 4K.

Ah, I see it was never very popular. It was critically acclaimed, but not popular.

And for me personally, this is probably why it didn't interest me:

The Wire is deliberately dense, dark and difficult to watch. Storylines take whole series to unravel, characters move in and out of focus – or are killed off without warning – as the labyrinthine plots develop, and some of the characters use street slang so impenetrable viewers are often forced to turn on the subtitles. David Simon, despairing of and despising most mainstream US television dramas, wants to force viewers of The Wire to concentrate and work hard for the show's rewards, just as they would when reading a challenging book.
