I can give a couple examples where the South side is better:

Jacksonville, FL (Northside is the WORST, East is actually best, but South is good too)
Tampa, FL (South Tampa is the best, East and NorthEast is the Worst, NorthWest is good too)

My SO lived in the north STL ghetto.. but would never set foot in East St. Louis.

In California coastal communities, the tendency is for the east side to be worse. San Jose, Oakland, Los Angeles, and parts of San Francisco all fit.

To add to that trend, there's Camden across from Philly.

This. South San Jose is downright idyllic.

I think you've got that backwards.

Guilford and Roland Park are in the northern part of the city. Brooklyn and Curtis Bay are the southernmost part of Baltimore.

South Baltimore isn't known as "Billytown" for no reason.

As you can see H-town doesn't have a side, BTW this 214 murdes were a really low count for H-town, usually we get around 250-350 range.

My theory on why the SS here is better than the NS is because most Lexingtonians moved from Southern Kentucky and wanted quick access to visit "home". Lexington is where everyone in the SouthEast 1/4 of Kentucky come to shop, go to the hospital, and move for jobs. The NS got less in migration because it faces rural areas that are near Cincinnati and Louisville.
No, Lexington has to do with zoning. They've preserved the areas in the north and west for horse farms and don't allow development up there. The nicest part of Lexington in the 60s was the north. The southside was rundown except for the new development in Tates Creek. But since then, the new development that has been allowed was on the southside.

The downtown and parts of the western area of Santa Maria are the bad areas while the eastern and southern part are nice areas.

...Well, the South Side of New York is Staten Island, those expensive coastal neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, and Lower Manhattan. You could do worse than those areas. lol

What are the areas along North Avenue considered? Central Baltimore.

Granted, Staten Island does have some pretty rough parts....on the northern side.
