The College Park Academy is a county charter school for grades 6-9 currently and 6-12 in three years. Application goes through a lottery, not a test. The school will have approximately 100 students per grade. Applications have been in excess of 1,000 for the past three years. The school is effectively run by the University of Maryland through a board of directors composed largely of high level university faculty and staff. Plans are to replicate the school elsewhere in the County and have slots set aside at the school for students living in the local area. Currently many of the CPA students live more than 10 miles away from the school.

You are right about the lottery. I mis-typed.

The slots for those who live locally plan has been rejected by the state as impermissible. And the school has its drawbacks like no after school activities. There are many reasons a parent would not want that untraditional setting for their child.

Its not exactly impermissable as other schools in the state and even Prince George's County have catchment areas. i believe state law has changed recently to allow a catchment area for up to 1/3 of the students. Since the school is not designed to be for everybody, it doesn't matter that many people would not want to go to school there. So far students who leave, generally leave after 8th grade when they are able to test into Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

The Maryland general assembly and PG COUNTY Public Schools have said the proposal is a violation of state law. Maybe they'll change the rules or the school has to change how out defines itself.

Further up College Park but still related to development

Early this month, College park City Council approved a total of nearly $105,000 to help build the Gateway Park and a fitness trail around the Hollywood (REI / MoM) Shopping Center.

Council approved the FY2017 Program Open Space (POS) allocation using $20,000 for land acquisition to expand the Hollywood Gateway Park and using $94, 712 for the wellness trail around Hollywood Shopping Center as proposed by staff.

Prince George’s County’s allocation of POS funds in FY2017 is $3,258,859; College Park will receive $114,711.84 (3.52%) of this allocation. In most years the City is required to spend equally between acquisition of land and development projects. This year the City has the ability to spend the entire amount on development projects. Development projects require a 25% match of local funds.

The Hollywood Gateway Expansion project is set up to buy additional land for the Hollywood Gateway Park, specifically land behind 4705 Edgewood, the house next to the park property so that access to the park can occur from 47th Avenue and to acquire an easement for property adjacent to the 4703 Edgewood, near Route 1. The City is currently negotiating with the property owner to acquire the land.

In FY2014, $82,988 in POS funds were allocated towards the Hollywood Gateway Park Expansion; the FY2017 recommendation by staff is to add another $20,000. For design and construction of the Hollywood Gateway Park $437,675 of POS funding has been allocated: $328,257 state funding and $109,418 local funding.

Too bad REI is leaving. Would have been a great test track for gear.

I am surprised they're leaving. It seems like things are moving positively in College Park.

They just sighed a lease for the Uline Arena in DC. So, they are consolidating some of their stores into that one. I mean who knew that DC would get a Dicks and a huge REI?

We

Perhaps some other smaller chain will take their place.

There's an online petition to make them stay.

I don't see the logic of moving into DC.
