This has been mentioned on UK weather forums, too. On the one sunny day we've had here since this cold spell started, there was minimal thaw, compared to the previous cloudy days which had far more snow melt.

13 with rising temps overnight prior to a few inches of snow! Seeing as it is Jan., we could use some snow cover!

3 Feet of snow fell from just Lake Effect snows.

US National Weather Service Buffalo NY

An Arctic airmass over the Great Lakes provided for a significant lake-effect snow event off Lake Ontario leading up to January 23, 2013 (maximum snowfall reports 3 feet near the southeast shoreline). Near the end of this lake-effect snow event conditions were favorable for the formation of a mesoscale vortex. Here is a radar image of the vortex and you can read more about this event by clicking on the following link: http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/training/visit/blog/

Freaky accident happened just outside Buxton this morning on a black-iced road.

Father, 42, on the school run dies and wife and children injured as two cars carrying same family slide off icy road into pond within five minutes of each other | Mail Online

We had single digit temps in place for us during that time frame, just sitting over Wisc. for days, and on the other side, just plain WOW! Thanks for the links!

Been in the teens here the past several days, with wind chills in the single digits. I'm not a huge fan of this much cold, but I do appreciate that hopefully it will kill off some of the stink bug problems we have here. Now, on that note, sometimes I wish it was as cold as Minneapolis here to really cull them
