The dead are most likely the elderly who aren't drinking enough fluids.

Seriously? How is this possible? Hundreds dead with 86 degree temps?
Elderly people, people with respiratory problems, people swimming in lakes and reservoirs and been dragged under by the undercurrent, and so on. To be honest though, I'm not sure how they came to such a large number - I suspect the deaths they are reporting are mostly deaths that occur in an average year, but the recent 'heatwave' (barely) has pushed the numbers up, but I can't believe it's been that significant. 2,000 people or so died in the hot summer month of August 2003, mostly the elderly, so I doubt nearly 1,000 people have died due to this 'heatwave' alone. I also suspect sensationalist media reporting is at play here - cold weather kills more people here, and as far as I remember, nowhere near 760 people died even during the very cold winter month of December 2010. There has to be more to the story.

St Louis summers are perfect imho... Quite steamy, with very intense spikes in both temperature and dew points.... Their winters are too mild
People here aren't that used to hot weather. Old people are always the most at risk whenever it gets hot or cold. Also, nobody has a/c here and people's homes are staying constantly hot. I've been so lucky with my house, it doesn't feel anywhere near as bad as other houses I've been in.

The warm spell is well and truly over on the 25th now, seems the ECM was definitely wrong in its predictions of a heatwave next week now. Back to heavy rain and cold next week!

Forecast high of 99°F. Why can't we go for 100°F at this point?
